Terry;119274 wroteSurely you weren't driving on tyres with the steel or textile belt showing - "unbeknownst" is not a word to be used with tyres - regularly check depth of tread, sidewall condition and pressure. Not meaning to sound schoolmaster-ish but that's a basic of any car ownership. That said, what tyres and size exactly are you running at the moment? if you are considering smaller diameter wheels (say 17 or 18 if yours are 19) then you must/should keep the rolling radius the same as original. i.e. if yours are 50 profile then you should look for 60 or 65 or 70 if you go smaller. Otherwise your gearing will change, it may not be compatible with the spare and a whole slew of difficulties arise. Just MHO. Gone are the days when we threw on 13" rims instead of 15" to get a bit more acceleration our of Austin A40s ;) .
Thank you Terry and consider me duly chastened. Motor issues have never been something to which I've paid sufficient attention.
I am working towards reformation. :/
As for changing the wheels for ones that are smaller, I discussed this idea with my mechanic who confirmed the pointlessness of doing this given the only reason I bought an XC90 rather than an XC70, was for the greater height to avoid scraping the underside on uneven ground here in the country and also ease of entry and exit.......I'm turning 103 next month......
In addition he warned me that swapping wheel sizes can affect other functions and so it can bring with a a range or troubles...what I think you too were suggesting.
Many thanks again for the written kick up the posterior. Safety re tyres is indeed paramount.
