Guys, new on here and new to Volvos. I have just bought a very nice 144 auto sedan. I have changed the exhaust manifold/engine pipe flange gasket, it is the twin pipe type, used maniseal on the gasket but I still have a leak from the rear of of the flange? What else can I do?

Cheers, Paul
Heya Paul @cset and welcome. Try posting a pic or two the area. It sounds like you may be missing the flange 'olive' that sits on the exit pipe...
Is all back together now. There was no "olive" when I took it apart (twice).

How do I post a pic on here, I couldn't find any way to do it?

Paul
Will give it a go.

Your reference to an "olive" has got me though as there was no evidence of one and the parts supplier didn't mention one.
I could be wrong, but on the 142 I have a memory of there being the gasket and and an olive... @volvodriverman or @spac or @rob... Thoughts?
=D>

No, there's no olive, just the gasket according to the WS manual...
Is the manifold to head sealed sufficiently/tightened? Had that issue too... Or leak in pipe near to flange?
I will take it apart again and try to look at the back of the engine pipe to make sure there is no damage. I am sure it is all done up tight enough, also I used maniseal gasket sealer on it. The sealing face of the manifold may not be smooth enough, will check it out again. Getting good at taking it all apart. =P~
Hahaha Jup, I hear you...

Thanks for that mate, I only have an Autobooks manual, it's info is underwhelming. A factory manual is on its way to me.
Check that the threads on the manifold to downpipe are free all the way up. You may be getting a false 'bind' due to rust/cauterisation of the threads...
Carbonisation... But you get the idea ...

I replaced the studs and nuts, studs are all the way in, did that when the manifold was off. Will check it again when I remove it again, will cleanup all the mating surfaces and reassemble. Hopefully, all will be well!
I'd guess crack in engine pipe/weld where it meets the flange if its sealed up well otherwise.
Get a long piece of rubber hose, stick one end to your ear & search around with the other until you find the leak.

Thanks, will check that as well when I take it apart tomorrow.

Did that at the beginning, that was why I did the flange gasket first.
