I wonder if brand new fuel tank is available as 240 ones are at around $700.
You get 2 year warranty with that .
I priced them from Rockauto and it's around $100 cheaper landed at my door taxes paid. Local is safer plus warranty.

Ex850R 140 pre-74 tanks are different to 140/240 tanks 74+.
The whole rear floor pan is different in 74 140s.
ETA - Nobody makes a replacement 140/164 tank for pre-74 models.; some people have adapted a mid-60s Mustang tank.

The manifold has been finally removed! Thanks to picking up one of these -

The three 9/16 nuts holding the manifold in place didn't want to shift until this little fella did his stuff.
A bit of heat, and a lot of muscle, and the nuts were loose.

Next step? Engine and transmission removal. 99% of the parts for the B20 rebuild have arrived from VP Auto, but I'm tempted to use Mahle slugs instead of the ones VP supplies these days, which VolDan tells me aren't Mahles.

I've removed the SU HS6s from the manifold, and they'll be up for sale soon. A pair of Stromberg 175 CD2 SE carbs came with the car, and they've been rebuilt by the local carby guy, who's since retired. Why Strombergs? They're a known quantity and they were OE for the car.

Arebee informs me that the M410 boxes with B20 bells have arrived from the US and are awaiting pickup from his abode, so a barge trip is required. One M410 is going behind Larry's B20.

Then I've got a 73 model overdrive switch (it's another 140 One Year Only Item) on its way from Hi Performance Auto to switch the J-type on and off.

It will all look factory when done. 🙂

At some point soon, I'll also have to pull the fuel tank and get it cleaned. I reckon it's a bit rusty in the guts after 50 years. And if it isn't now, it never will be, once it's been treated. Figure I'll save myself later potential drama.

The funny thing is how I thought I'd already ordered all the parts needed before I took the engine over to the engine shop for rebuilding and machining, but... no. Going though the list, I discovered I didn't have any replacement cam bearing. So back in December, I put an order into VP for a set of ACL cam bearings, then VP tells me they're out of stock, and ETA for new stock is.... four months. Sheesh.

Luckily, Planetman from TurboBricks had a line on ones that could be had sooner, and they've arrived.

I've decided to put one of the three ex-US M410s behind the B20B. The problem was how I didn't have any spare extension shifter lids for these boxes, and I was unable to source any locally. I now have two, but one of them has a chewed out brass bush in the southern end of the cover. Mother Volvo has a replacement brass bush for the front one, but not the rear (southern) one.....

Here's a pic of the inside of the good cover. You can see how somebody has made a long custom brass bush to sit at the gear lever end. The only spare part available off the shelf is for the one at the northern end, up near the gear selector gate; it's barely visible in the pic (it's near the hourglass-shaped thing which triggers the reverse light switch).

My Skandix order came in (which included 2 of the northern end bushes and their associated o-ring seals) since I also needed a replacement viscous clutch for the fan. Unfortunately, I ran into the same problems as sksmith on TurboBricks discovered with the fan clutch he'd ordered.

There's lumps of metal (tabs) near the mounting holes which don't allow the fan to sit on the clutch assembly.

I wonder if it's worth just filing these protrusions to get clearance, but as he pointed out, doing so might throw the whole unit out of balance.

And, despite the best laid plans of mice and men, I still have more parts to order. Damn. I did want to have this car running before Easter, but I still have to find someone to dismantle and overhaul the M410 and overdrive before installation. Ah well.

Major Ledfoot re brass bush, rankin and bond have shut down now, but maybe try Glasgow engineering or even the engine shop. If the other lid has a good bush, maybe base measurement from that?

Question, have you considered filing it, and then balancing it? I expect it would be much less sensitive than say a flywheel or a propshaft (because physics), you could probably just run a rod through the middle and suspend it between two level surfaces. If it's out of balance it will roll back and forth but if its balanced it should just stay put no matter the orientation.

Nice work. I have a couple early-style fuel tanks from 164s…at least one of them looked really clean inside. You're welcome to them if you can get them from VIC…they're just taking up space in my shed.

carnut222 Thank you - but I think @DCW242 may be in touch with you about your spare 164 tanks - I believe he's after one.

I do have a 164E tank in the shed; it's just a matter of taking it down to the radiator guy to get steamed and cleaned. With the 965 having more days off the road this year than on it this year, it's held up progress on many things somewhat.

This info may be useful to people who have 140s, 164s, and 1800s with long shifter covers on their M40 / M41 / M400 / M410 gearboxes that have a worn out brass bush for the shift rod in the gear stick end of the cover. The old method of fixing them last century was to replace the long shifter cover from a wrecked 140. These days, there are virtually zero 140s to be found in wrecking yards any more, especially manual ones. These days, you have to fix what you have.

FUN & GAMES WITH LONG SHIFTER COVERS

In our last episode, I mentioned how I'd found a chewed-out brass bush in the rear section of one of the extension shifter lids I'd picked up.
Internally, it was a wee bit out of round.....

The parts book shows it in the diagram as [2], but that bush was not available. In fact, it was so not available that it never even have a part number.

The bush shown as [3] is, however, but it's different, and it can't be used where [2] is. (I got a couple, and tried....)

It was suggested that I take some measurements and see what was commercially available to replace [2].

Then I stumbled on the specs for an SKF sintered bronze bush, PSMF 142020A51 - 14mm ID, 20mm OD, and 20mm long with a flange.

Presto!

So an order was place to a bearing company in the UK for 3 of these. I'll have spares in case I need any later.

They arrived about a fortnight later. So I popped one of them into the freezer, then got out my big trusty G-clamp, and push fit the beastie into the cover.

Fixed!

Now it's a matter of getting two of the three M410s overhauled, so I'll have one ready for Larry, and one ready-to-go spare.
