Hella 500 driving lights wiring

So I was looking at the wiring diagram for these driving lamps I'm installing:

And I don't care for it. I'd rather run the trigger from the high beam + through the relay then ground through the dash switch. Only thing I don't know is if I need to do it differently for the switch backlight.

Either way. Diagram is pointlessly confusing thanks to location of pins in diagram not matching the standard physical location.

Are 240 headlights positive or negative switched? That has some bearings on wiring from memory after I did the 4Runner. Personally I don't have a light in my driving light switch.

Hella have a habit of making everything bloody confusing.
30 Fused power direct from power board
85 to switch, switch to earth ( switch on dash)
87 to lights
86 from high beam wire at relay

240 lights run a latching system, when arm pulled earth is applied to H/L relay and that causes relay to switch over to H/B or low beam. That won't have any impact on operation of D/Ls, just tap into the wires going to High beam as your 86 switching wire

If you want the switch for driving lights to light up you'll need to apply power from the fuse box, you should have 2 earths and 1 positive.

One day when I'm not aching so much I'll sit down and draw up all the different relay combo you can use in a 240.

Okay so the way I went is thus:

I took constant +12V from the terminal junction near the battery to relay pin 30 with 20A fuse. I spliced the high beam instrument lamp wire next to the headlights relay (also next to the battery) to pin 86. I ran pin 85 to the dash with a 2A fuse, into one of those purple Volvo dealer accessory switches. From there I went switched to ground with a little circuit to illuminate the switch when the driving lamps are on.

NB: I may have muddled pins 85 and 86 in that description... Whichever way around makes it work (I think it doesn't matter though).
