Oil was drained from the 1HD-T and some coolant came out. Considering just throwing the gearbox in and rebuilding the 1HD-FTE instead. I've sourced 1HD-FTE injector lines and a 1HD-FT intake manifold, hopefully the two are compatible. Still on the lookout for a valve cover and timing cover.

And it has a cracked piston. Gearbox going in soon.

Which motor?

The 12 valve. Going to do a full rebuild and pump conversion on the 24 valve.

Dropping off the 1HD-FTE and HDJ79 chassis during the week. That escalated quickly.

Apparently the FTE looks promising.

Some progress:
The 1HD-FTE injectors and a 1HZ pump have been sent to All States Diesel Injection, to be rebuilt and set to Yanmar 6LP specs (factory rated at 220kw).
Turbo sent to MMP Turbos to be rebuilt with CT26 core. Upgrades include billet impeller wheel (told it's equivalent to a TD05-19G), 360 degree thrust bearing, 3" inlet.
Head will be going to what used to be Riverina Cylinder Heads next week, though they've recently moved and the business name will change to something like Diesel Cylinder Head Developments.
Intake manifold is on the way from Kaiapoi Repowers Auto And Exhausts in NZ, as mine was cracked.
OEM engine mounts and misc items ordered from Partsouq.
NPC 1300Nm clutch kit with billet flywheel to be ordered soon.
Unifilter has arrived.
Need to decide on an intercooler.

With the manifold cracking, is there any success in welding?

Possibly, but it fell into two pieces when removed, and while a replacement was hard to find, it was fairly cheap.

Mmmm I12 power!

Update:
Turbo is done
Head is done
Pump is done
I bought another gearbox which seems in better shape
Only waiting on a Partsouq order, clutch, and a few other random bits

Hoping to do some minor things this weekend, like modify the FZJ80 airbox lid, paint the upper valve cover, and order more parts.
Dauntless
Engine is pretty much assembled, gearbox will be bolted on in the next few days. Trying to find some random stuff like turbo spec fuel pickup and firewall hardline as they're 12mm and the NA is 10mm.

Stupid question... but at this point... would have fitting a ls truck motor and manual box from a us truck have cost less and taken less time and effort and deliver better fuel economy?
Dauntless
The bloke doing the work has an LS powered 45 series. Adaptor plates exist. No chance of less time or better fuel economy. Cost would be similar.

your valve cover looks like an oil pan

At least the turbo is shiny.
