We drove my wifes new C70 back from Melbourne last weekend and loved.
Yes, I'm still working on the AM side of the radio reception, but at present we have a more pressing problem.
As part of transfering the rego from Vic to SA, the vehicle has to be inspected at an inspection station here in SA where they physically verify the VIN, the engine number and whatever else they do.
All went well at the inspection, except that the inspector could not find the engine number after many attempts. He was using a mirror and a remote camera.
In the end, he gave me a piece of paper asking me to supply a photo of the vehicle, a photo of the VIN, and a photo of the engine number. Basically he said it is not his problem and I need to fix it!!!!
He told me that I had to take it to a mechanic to get a photo done.
He also told me the engine number is at the back of the engine, towards the top left side (as viewed from the front)
I did find a number at the top of the block, but he has already told me that is not the number I'm looking for.
This morning I removed the large air hose from the back of the engine and tried to feel for a flat section which might have a number on it - no luck.
I stuck a camera down the back to get some pics and isolate where it might be - no luck!
Where is the ###### engine number please?? Am I even looking in the right area???? I know what the number is, I just need to physically photograph it on the engine.
If it is at the rear of the engine, should I be able to find it? Can anyone tell me where it is, using my supplied photo? Is it behind A or B or.......
Or am I going up the garden track and looking in the totally wrong area???
Please help.

still trying - took the cover off the left side of the engine, but no obvious places to get to.

Thanks for those photos - I found them a couple of minutes before you posted. I'm in Burra in South Australia, and the internet is not exactly speedy!
I've given up.
I can locate the bolts above where the number should be, but I cannot get down to the actual number to see it, let alone photograph it! I've lost more skin than I expected trying to get my hand or fingers down the back.
Guess it will be a visit to Rontons, the mechanics, next week for their help. Bugger of it is that they did the timing belt on Tuesday and we could probably have done it then, but I didn't know then what I know now.
Thanks for your help.

15 days later
Going to mechanic on monday morning so it can cool down and he can locate the bloody thing!!!!! Hopefully he will have better luck that myself, and everyone else who has tried. I am over this whole process. Highly tempted to photoshop those photos, but NO, I'm a good law abiding citizen and will persist to get this completed.
My mechanic gave up as well and just copied it over from other paperwork the car had, when it got its blue slip
Problem is that motor reg in SA HAVE to either see the number, or have a photo of the number on the engine for it to be registered
Are there no other C 70s in SA?
This issue never come up before?
In your photos, I think what you need to do is remove the cover at "A" and then you'll be able to see it.
Engine serial number can also be found on the barcode/sticker on the timing belt cover if it hasnt been pressure washed off

Thats gonna make your life difficult not really possible to get a good look at it with the turbo/head in the way

tell me about it!!!!!
And they will not accept the sticker on the timing belt cover :<(((
Unbelievably frustrating and has somewhat soured the experience of the new car.
There is a plastic cover over the engine number
Your not getting to it without a fuck ton of work

Would reccomend taking a pic on an 850 where you can see the number and then photoshoping it

Or find a dodgy inspection person
Or

Or find an understanding inspection person who doesn't have time to stuff around and trusts you
Finally got the photos we need to get this finished.
Yes, it cost money, but for the bits to be all pulled out and replaced, It is one of those "Volvo" things!
Registration can now be completed.
Thanks all.
