Hey all,

I want to mount a set of auxiliary driving lights to Nina's 244 before we head down to the snow this year. The easiest/least destructive option as I see it is to mount them to an L-bracket that mounts to the bumper through the number plate holes.

I had a 240 at one point that had a pair of Hella Comet 500's, but they produce a pencil beam, and I'm thinking I might prefer a wider beam. Is this a case of just stick a Fresnel lens on the front or something, or do I need to use a different light?

Opinions? Anyone have a nice setup? The only other 240 I've seen with nice light setup is Ryan's 244, but I think they were fogs rather than main beams.

... Or the bolt holes underneath the bumper. Either:

1. Stand two brackets off a little from the plastic bumper cover. i.e. A few washers the same size so tightening down doesn't ruin the bumper cover, then a nut (or skip and go directly to...), a bracket, then a split/locking washer and a nut - all on a longer bolt if necessary. (Using stainless steel hardware from a boat place maybe.)

2. Same as above but a single horizontal bracket spanning the two holes - then mount the lights the distance apart you prefer.

And... Considered an "LED light bar" mounted under the bumper? (Don't know if that's the correct name.) I see them in auto catalogues all the time, but have never actually seen one turned on to judge their light ability/spread. Or how it would look (aesthetics).
Okay, but I'm not asking for advice on mounting them, just on light selection itself. I'm going to mount them above the bumper, most likely using an L bracket as I can just buy one off the shelf.

I don't really want to run a light bar. I did think about it, but it would look weird on a 240.
Don't run a light bar unless you spend $1000s on one you'll be disappointed.

My service vans (Merc Sprinters) have Narva 5" pencil and spread beams, we do a lot of country miles 50k per year and a lot of my driving out to Gundy is of a night. I've had dearer ones but really battling to tell any difference, BUT make sure you wire up with 2 x relays, one for each side, 30A min. Then you have the fun of setting them up.
Brand new reflectors from volvo make a huge difference

That aside
8" spots with 55w hids work better than any led option
I have been impressed with the ebay 36w led bars i have for flood lights on the trailer

I dont think there are any good led spot beams on the market at any price though
This plus 100w globes and updated wiring best option
Kangaroos still wont run away with big lights staring at them. - Déjà Vu - hopefully you will have safe trips this year.

Another option to consider is to fit 264 headlights. Im no expert on 264s, but I have a spare pair that have seperate low and high beam sections, and hence would be better than a normal 240, especially if fitted with modern bulbs.
The best way to go is a pair of Cibie Super Oscars - 100w - one with a pencil focus and the other wide spread - they turn night into day!
Philia_Bear;103647 wroteThose do look nice
Yes they do, the mounts are cheap on ebay
Yeah I've heard Super Oscars are the best, but they are quite expensive
Have a look on eBay - if you shop round they can be quite cheap....
I have picked -up some Cibie oscars ,not Super Oscar ,second hand from Gumtree . They are in various states of condition but still worked out cheaper than new and I like the used look .
They can be upgraded to hid's and spares ,eg reflectors , are readily available, although expensive.
I think the set up above looks great but I think all driving/spot lights in NSW have to mounted behind the bumper front edge.
I bought one of these..

And a Narva relay kit. Easy set-up.

My old setup.
3 Narva 175's (I think the outsides were pencil and a broad in the centre, blue lenses on all 3)
2 el cheapo fogs

Seriously insanely bright and you could see about 2k's down the road, unfortunately broken in an altercation with a rav 4.
When I have money for lights again I'd probably go the same except skip the fogs since Sydney doesn't really get foggy.
