Why not?
Im keen. From the research I have done so far everything is ticking the boxes however I would appreciate some constructive comments before I start spending. Someone must of looked at this before...
Philia_Bear
It should fit...

Which boxes have you ticked?
rodong
Probably easier to say I havent ticked:
Electrics - trying to use my old guages or better to make a complete new dash. Possibility of setting up the air con.
Sump - how much customisation will be required to fit
Gearbox positioning - again how much customisation will be required to fit
I dont really want to have the engine protruding from the bonnet. The Barra is quite tall.
Everything else should be pretty straight forward as a conversion goes me thinks.

Lean it over at angle as a bell housing converter will be needed anyway?

If you use a late 240 with updated A/C system may help also a early Barra with 5 speed T5 or 4sd auto from a BA would take care of the gearbox issue, I would say height and electrics would be the biggest issue and possibly the extra weight over the front. As for sump I'll look at my BFII and compare with the 240 I have regarding the sump.
Andy
The FG sump would be the go as it's a rear sump design. The FG engine control is far better in terms of camshaft control and overall torque curve. Unfortunately it is heavily integrated with the vehicle's BCM ABS and climate system.

What other barra conversions into other cars are around and what controls did they use for engine management?
Andy
A lot of people use aftermarket ECUs or fit the BF engine and pcm.
You could get a way with a newer FG engine and BF PCM

It's always the length and weight of the engine that has held people away from it. Just as they are tall. They are a bloody long engine.
I measured my xr6 engine in comparison to my740.
6th cylinder would sit hard against the firewall, serpentine belt in the radiator.
Irrespective of theenfineframe and sump position
Vee_Que
It's a case of suck it and see. They fit in vl commodores etc, so may fit. But on a 164 with its longer nose they are a stretch.
Could more easily use a v6 Volvo dash for tachometer. The t5 or btr auto uses an electronic sender on the box that you could use for your speedo on an early car, later cars were electronic speedo, on the diff.
The rest... Well, you'd be the first to do it, so anything you do is an experiment.

Early or late 740? the early 740 had a shorter engine bay than the 240 and then got longer because of the change in the front core support
940 engine bay
Front of the Volvo 6 Cyl B6304
Rear
deceptively it has >4" of clearance
Philia_Bear
Move the E-fan to the front of the radiator and I bet it would fit without issue

I think there are guys who specialise in Barra conversion wiring. The factory ECU would be worth keeping as there are so many tuners for them now. You can introduce boost in a nice and controlled fashion.
You would want the 6 speed boxes (auto or manual) as the weaker 4 & 5 speed boxes don't handle any extra torque from stock...at all.
I really miss the massive torque of the Barra turbo, I thought the LS3 would be close but it's so far behind it's not funny.
Samman88
They fit ;)
goldiethe240
Hey samman88, i know this was forever ago but what mounts did you use for the engine? This is the exact set up im working towards with my 240 any advice?

And put the intercooler 2/3 hanging out the bumper ? Hey anything is possible. I guess the weight is always the issue.
Though I suspect the length of the b6304 and the barra are significantly different.
Much like the length difference between an early and late volvo i6. (if I'm not mistaken)
And a redblock v's 5cylinder whiteblock
deleted_user_160
Sam now add the second cam and valves to the width of the head. Run out of room very quick.
Though like it said, anything can fit if you want it to. It's just a matter of can it fit while maintaining its ability to be registered or even engineered.

Using a Process West or Plazmaman plenum and TB relocation will make your plumbing a lot simpler.
Samman88
@blondejay The intercooler isn't 2/3 out of the bumper. And width is a non-issue on an I6. If you're worried about weight then put an sr behind the xmember. Not sure how the whiteblock I6 is relevant here.
OP just asked for useful comments, I thought pictures of one in a 240 chassis would be useful rather than conjecture about length and if it would fit in a 740.
deleted_user_160
Ok ease up Sam.
It was relevant, because I have measured both. As I legitimately considered it for my wagon. And pulled the pin on it die to the length. Yes as mentioned the engine bay is shorter.
The volvo i6 was mentioned due to the above photos of the volvo b6304 in a 240 and given how different the external dimensions many of the engines can be. Saying that one i6 can fit won't always mean another can fit.
Much like you and your jz swap. Is your jz the same length as the barra or b6304 ?
If one was to build a skid rig, the barra weight all up the front wouldn't be an issue at all. Racing is no doubt not an ideal choice for favorable handling, unless you could get cyl4 where the dashboard is.
It's all relevant, it's all views, it's all options.
