..and weighed about a tonne less!
But yeah, your reasons are sound. The V8 may fare better as a cult car – that exhaust note!
It's a good vehicle and, on a slight downhill, not as slow as you might think. The other day we drove back from the coast via the very steep winding road, the weight became a factor... and the dodgy engine, gearbox, and suspension, I suppose. Wasn't bad on the way down though!
Looks like the 996 is finally picking up in value? And prices for 944's and 968s have gone a bit mental.. even 924s are pricey, which seems a bit insane..
Meanwhile XC90s and old Saab's are going through the floor!

If this observation is anything to go by it gives you an idea the 2.5T isn't bad on power. On my daily drive to the industrial site I'm often sharing the roads with impatient people in tradie type vehicles.. On quite a few occasions I've had a new Ford Ranger up my backside keen to get ahead of me and the slow car in front of me.. when It comes to an overtaking lane I've given the XC a boot to overtake the slow car and I can see it leaves the Ranger behind who's trying to keep up. That's good enough power for me. I think it frustrates them that their new flash Ranger can't keep up.

And the Porsche scene is stupid now. Seems lots of people are in it for profit/values and not so much for pure enjoyment. It's a funny scene. If it's not an Australian released matching numbers Porsche then you are lower class.

Honestly, the diesel noise is minor for the economy it returns, and as proven all the time, diesels are sought after well after the petrol versions die. So I disagree there.
But the xc90 V8 will be the sought after one.

Change more Diesel engines than petrol!
Vee_Que
But they are fixing them, not scrapping them.if owners did better maintainence it would be less common. But people put the cheapest diesel in from dirty tanks and skip oil changes etc etc.

Do anything on the 90 this weekend @pastry ?
pastry
nope, spent the time building a deck! Promise it'll get some love one day.
I've got rego due on the new Saab, so that's getting mounts done ASAP when they arrive. Then I'll pull engine out the other one and fix her up to sell (hoping it's a couple of weekends work).
Then the shed will be free, and I think I'm going with my original plan of re-shelling the bottom. I'll have the head looked at, refresh the top of the engine (PCV, coils, plugs etc), clean the pickup, and I guess do the timing belt at that time.. never had a car with a belt or VVT. Will probably stuff the timing.

I'm sure youtube university will show you how to do it.

How's ya fuel flap? I have the typical flappy fuel door.. got a new hinge to install.
pastry
seems to flap quite happily.
Might even be the best bit of the car.

How's the tranny going since the first drain and fill?
Noticing how smooth mine is lately after the 2nd.
pastry
not bad actually, even that partial fluid swap did make a difference.
Looking forward to a smooth engined beast one fine day.

The goose is cooked! :bawling:
We came back from a trip to QLD to a bit of a coolant leak – didn't realise until i'd been travelling down the Hume for nearly an hour on way home from the airport. Noticed the temp sensor creeping higher and higher – no surprise at 115kph ish.
Filled her up and seemed "OK" to limp home, but unfortunately it hasn't survived. Blowing smoke and stalling. Probably cooked the turbo and blown the HG.
Not sure if I have the energy to pull the engine out for a replacement at this stage, maybe if it's time to admit that suspiciously cheap was a bit too cheap.
Thankfully my other car went through inspection today without issue. Just not quite in time to retire the '90 for maintenance. It gave up on Saturday arvo. :persevere:
Chris
Dayum. Come on
@pastry new engine, full spec, Cayenne Turbo eater :)

Can i borrow your wallet a minute @Chris?
I've found it pretty much impossible to find info on pulling a B5254 through the top, rather than out the bottom with the subframe. I'm sure it's possible but i wonder how much clearance you'd need above. Due to local planning regs my shed isn't particularly tall.
Slowbrick
I doubt you will get the motor out the top. It will catch on so much shit. I pulled a B523T out the top of a 98 V70 and would never do it again. Was such a shit fight and would have been so much easier to just unbolt the subframe and drop it down. The things we do.
pastry
Thanks @Slowbrick. Funny because it seems like such a vast cavity of an engine bay.
I might take the head off first for a look then see what I can see. Easier access, a bit less weight, and the bonus of not needing to lift the front end quite so high if the block has to come out the bottom afterwards. Unless the timing gear is still in the way, that is.. suppose it will be?
Slowbrick
I thought there was a bunch of room too but there is so much low hanging shit that just isnt designed to make its way past the top half of the engine bay. Maybe just do it outside on a sunny day? Should only take you about 2-3 hours to get everything disconnected and the car rolled out over it.
pastry
Well, maybe for some! I haven't worked on these at all so I'm sure there are plenty of traps.
