If I was to consider a 1976 264 with low k's & it had been sitting stationary for over 10 years what sort of things would I need to look for? I was thinking corrosion in the engine block or any of the ally components? All advice appreciated. Beema41

I have a 144 spare, needs some work though. @spac has some early 244's too, not sure on condition though.
I contacted the seller on gumtree about the yellow 144, seems it's got some damage. None of the photo's supplied in the advert show the damage side (???) so I've asked for some. Standby.

Appreciate all the writing and intricate explanations. I hope you all cut and pasted them into a word document!
I'm looking at buying an 83 240GL Wagon only described as a manual, body is totalled so is the engine. Price $100. Then looking at a 244GL about 80 model but it is Auto. I would like to have a Manual so i'm putting two and two together but having never embarked on such a job before It's good to know I can come here and tap your experience/s.
The only down side as I see it is, from my perspective I'd rather not molest a car, I'd really like to buy a factory manual but alas this may be the only option.

@Spac has this for sale that might suit? Factory manual wagon and early.

Yes, I've considered that one, however the engine has been sold. Prefer to keep all matching numbers. I may need to re-consider my options as it appears that engine swaps and gearbox changes are the norm, therefore buying an unmolested car difficult or maybe I need to spend a little more money ;-(
Why are matching numbers important?beema41;11566 wroteYes, I've considered that one, however the engine has been sold. Prefer to keep all matching numbers. Also... I paid less then $1000 for each of my running and registered manual 244's that I own currently
Just keep a keen eye on Ebay and Gumtree and Car-Sales and you will be rewarded
as a last note,
If you have a lift or pair of lifts...., the work can easily be done in a single day
Also...
plan for new engine mounts sooner then later

Matching numbers are important to me if only to maintain the authenticity of the vehicle and show it is not molested. For example, a genuine 1960's 122s with original papers, low miles, perhaps a 1 owner, with all its original equipment including hubcaps, radio etc is (in my mind) a perfect specimen. Unlike the recent one for sale on Ebay that got chop topped and was butchered in the process.
I know some people are into modifications, toyota celica gearboxes, turbo's, even chop tops etc but that's just not me. I'd prefer to find a 1 or 2 owner car, original everything.
The only mods I would consider may be wider wheels for safety reasons, lowered suspension for handling improvement and upgraded stereo system (using origina holes for speakers). Oh, and tinted windows.
Maybe I'm a prude?
I will be keeping an eye on Ebay/Gumtree though. I check the Volvo club pages too although they've gone a bit quiet lately.

A connoisseur...
Greg, If you're going to use the car, it is worth converting to manual.
I get the originality vibe (did you see our Galant?), but the autos - particularly the old three-speed autos - are pooh.
$100 for a donor car is good. The humble of 240 isn't on the endangered species list yet, but the supply of cheap ones is drying up.

Prude.
I say that in the nicest way , just ask Tiga B-)

it is funny different peoples acceptance of different levels of modification. My 164 is often criticized by some for being too modified, and others for being too standard.
Many would barely consider a manual conversion a modification, whereas to others it ruins the originality of the vehicle. The argument could also be made that tinted windows are more sacrilegious than a manual swap because window tint is always an aftermarket modification.
To each his own i say.

@LesM always in the best possible taste ;-) all Australian delivered early Volvos are 'modified' to make it in to the country. Purists and concrete...
Bummer! That's sounds great, do you mind me asking the price it went for?Ex850R;11595 wroteIf you came here a month or so ago i had a very nice 1978 245 man wagon in dark green and tan interior!

Yes, I recall my first 164 had the wiper pivots on the opposite sides to Aussie built cars, when I asked the question, I was told it was because they were made for the US market & had to modified for OZ. Same as the brakes, remembering the long pivot bar in the engine bay.Tigabu;11665 wrote@LesM always in the best possible taste ;-) all Australian delivered early Volvos are 'modified' to make it in to the country.
