  • SPT940's 960 wagon

Well I now have a 95 960 wagon.

I've started working on it, getting it to a roadworthy state.

It definitely needs an oil separator kit change. I've started working on that. The first thing I've noticed, is the front three rubber isolator tubes on the inlet manifold had slipped over the ridge on the inlet manifold?!?!?! Still has the Volvo sacrificial hose clamps. I recon there could be a slight vacuum leak there maybe!?!?

The steering rack needs a rebuild. Then its bushes, maybe front struts, springs probably.

Down the track I will do the E50 exhaust headers.

A few questions:

How do I deal with the air pump?

Do I do a two into one collector into a single inlet?outlet CAT and a 3"or 2.5" system? or run with the dual in/single out CAT?

I'm leaning toward the single in/single out CAT - 3" Commodore type, but it needs the two sensor inlets.

I'm going to try for 18" Pegasus with Volan coloured Gun Metal powder-coat to match the window trim.

I'm looking at eBay iPod adapter kit in place of the CD changer, but I'll use it with an iPad Mini I think. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Is there anything I should be thinking about?

This project had taken over from my 95 940GLE wagon, which I still really like. It feels lighter and had better turn in. It is pretty under powered by comparison though! The 960 power is very seductive!!!!!!

Anyway, I need to get onto the Bonnet/Radiator support panel repair. Any recommendations for a panel shop in the south east of Melbourne?

Also, how do I go about posting pictures on this forum?
So berry didn't have a bonnet or rack for you? Where Melbourne are you located?
Les @snoopy had experience with the ipod kit thing. I don't care for using stock parts for stereos. There is a panel shop opposite voldat in moorabbin that is working hard for volvo club members work.
Ahh the Tasmainian one? Welcome.

Talk to JonBot on here as a 960 owner and Volvo Technician too!

You can use XC90 strut tops and bearing plate ( better bearings and stronger rubber than 850 type ) Ask @AshDVS about supplying a range of suspension dampers , springs and bushes.

The engine sump breather (PCV) can be had from IPD , FCP -USA or PFS -UK which may be cheaper on post.
I cant pictyre the rubebr tubes you mean , they may be on the six cyl , i know the 5 cyl better.
Air pump , dont know about fixing , others here may but ,
amazon.com/OES-Genuine-Solenoid-select-models/dp/B001G7OVP6 could be it ?

Did you see the YATOUR ipod adapter to the cars H/U at all , Nicko and i have tried them and they work really well , plugging into one of the back plugs on the H/U. I got mine grom chinabay/alibaba as a 'test unit for my business'.

Talk to Alex -VQ here about panel shops in the SE suburbs , he loves the SE Suburbs.

When you decide to put a nice 19T or KKK-K24 turbo on this , please take lots of pictures and do a build thread!

Ohh , we need more pictures of the car onthis post.

I have some pics of past and present Volvos in the driveway. Probably posted them on OxHotVolvos at some stage. Could probably export them from there. Don't think I'll be doing the KKK-k24 thing. At least not in the short term. Its a 306K engine, which has only had scheduled maintenance. I'd want a tare down before I did that, and some deep pockets. I'll keep it as a nice cruiser for the moment. My 940 Wagon is more of a candidate for some extra power!

I'm thinking I will lower the the Nivomat mounts and drop the front to match. Rear seems firmer than the front as born out by the poor turn in and general understeer.

Does anyone know if the Sedan Rear Sway bar is thicker and can be fitted to the Wagon?
Sedan rear bar from a 960 is 18mm, at least for the IRS version.
The 740 rear sways could be the go?
Is that the TME lowering blocks ? I hadn't heard about lowering Nivomat rears till yesterday ! I had only heard you had to replace with normal dampers with the top mount swapped off a non Nivomat car. I wonder if the Nivomat is the same as the 850/x70 wagons? ( I will swap you them for the Nivomat ones if they are.) ;)
Nope on the current comments about the irs. The s2 960 rear end is different and doesn't lower that easily with the plastic spring that doesn't do much of the work. There is a v90 on turbo bricks with airbags. The v90000+ in showroom. He goes through the lowering process. It's not that easy and the sway bar on the later rear is different to earlier ones too.
I had 3 quotes for windscreens today. $245, $265 & $295. Can I do better anywhere? I'm after 1 for 940 & 1 for 960 (same same).
Different screens actually. The 60 screen is longer. That isn't a bad price. I paid $240 fitted on site for one for my 740 last year without the tint at the top.
really, 940 and 960 windscreens are different???
Is the post 95 960 sedan sway bar thicker than wagon with Nivomats? I have this feeling it may be?!?!? But are they interchangeable?
maybe they're different. i'll check.
960 is deeper by approx 60mm
940 might be cheaper yahoo?!?!?!?!?
Wow. I thought they were all the same.
Nah, the 960 screen effectively goes below the bonnet, where as the 940 stops at the scuttle panel where the vents are.
Same with the 88 on 760. The gaurds are different too as is the firewall.
So the 960 is the carry over platform for 850/V70?
No. Facelift 960 models have a different front suspension and subframe. Which means it has similar front hubs and the same style front struts. Rear end is an evolution of the 88-94 7/960 irs.
