Real-world experience sometimes disagrees with what's in the book, and this appears to a an example of it.
The part numbers in the book show vented rotors and non-vented use different hubs. How are they different, beyond part numbers? Ummm, well, I dunno. Since you've swapped 'em back 'n' forth in your real-world experience, the difference can't be that big.
When I have the opportunity, I'll put a 164E hub next to a 140 hub, and see what difference there is - if any.
Since I already have 164 hubs (heh), calipers and rotors, that's the route I'm taking with my 140 trio.
