Vintage Roof Rack
They cancelled the order as it's apparantly no longer available.
So I threatened a PayPal dispute and to raise the issue with their manager. I also provided them information on stock available elsewhere so they can order from them.
Not going to happen now is it :-(

Well, it was a glorious effort and it ain't over yet! I like 1971-144's idea of making one...
Vw dudes have the racks, get onto them.
I can ask my sisters boys, they are old VW nutters.

I wont give up on a proper 145 rack yet. I am now chatting with some guys at Scandcar in the Netherlands and got some interesting info:

So that's $1378.53 AUD. Just wow!
But I really want one!

For that price in freight you are not that far off a ticket to collect it in person. How many kg? I have often travelled with just hand luggage to bring back my 30 kg in stuff. Fun trip, great county. I do possibly have a student coming out here in early Feb.
Or we could build something very similar locally.
But yes, I get it, if I had the cash free, i would probably order one too.

Thanks. Good suggestions. Not sure on kg, will find out.
I really like the guys at scandcar. They are going to look for cheaper freight options but said they will be slower.. that I can live with. I sent them some pics of the 145. They might look at it and think "we need to help this guy get a better deal".
I think it would be great to build one! Knowing my OCD it would have to be accurate. Cool thing is they should be 245 compatible too.. more customers.

Wouldn't be hard for the guys building VW ones here to make one the same.

Cool. Yes please, would be keen to explore that option if there are some vw roof rack building gurus.
If we can come up with a plan, I'll take one as well if that is any help!
Maybe see if Scandcar can buy the plans for you?
Gentlemen, I'm in Melbourne and have this one I bought a year ago off Ebay for like $60

I restored it a little (see my Minty thread) but plan to take it apart again to get the steel parts chromed as they turned out lighter than I wanted. During this time, I would be happy to have someone look at it to replicate it (and straighten some parts if they could!)
When replicating it would be kinda difficult to get all the bend radiuses correct due to the thin wall tube and the bends being in 3 dimensions and so on, but I'm sure someone out there has the tools+know how.

I'm in love!
Oh my!
Ok, time for you to make some money sir! How much?

Sorry guys it isn't up for sale at this stage - I spent some quality time with my father milling out and routing the hardwood timber to the exact size of the cutouts in the rack;

So it has some sentimental value I guess.
I honestly didn't mean to brag about it/show off, was just offering it up if anyone wanted measurements/plans to replicate.
My only advice would be to trawl ebay and gumtree regularly with terms like Vintage, Classic and Kombi as many people don't know what they have. Perhaps even a gumtree wanted add?
All the best with your search...

Understandable. I wouldn't sell it either. Hopefully this thread has at least inspired you to finish it off.
I'll get one soon enough even if it means the devil credit card's help.

Make some money by lending it out to get it replicated?
Or perhaps get a place to scan it or do the measuring and create a detailed cad diagram from it?
I would be happy to put money towards that. Even if some of us couldn't fab one up ourselves we would have enough info then for a fabrication place to make it.

I would be interested in coming to see and measure it. Construction does not look so hard from the pictures, but tracing the profile would be good. I am thinking stainless tube to avoid the Chrome costs. I am in Melbourne in about four weeks. Where are you located? I am also thinking of a short sedan version for my car.
