Hi,
Thought i would check here if anyone else had this issue with a S40.
I have a 1999 S40 T4 with the B4194T motor, at random usually when cruising in 3rd or 4th gear it will start to bunny hop, if i change gears it will die, it will start fine straight after and continue to run for around 30min then start stalling again, sometimes it will feel like its going to stall then smooth out and be fine.
When it does stall i have no errors, but have had errors Bank 1 too rich, and short fuel trim error.
I have replaced the MAF which hasnt sorted the issue.
I am lead to believe it may be the rear o2 sensor as it seems to be stuck on 4.7 volts a lot of the time. front alternates between around 0.2 to 4.7 but slower than i think it should.
I have tried replacing the front sensor with a bosch, connector is the same, but after warming up engine stalls, with To rich, or Sensor 1 heater.
I am wondering if these bosch sensors are compatible with the 99 models as they state only compatible with the late 00 onwards, i dont understand why as the NGK's o2 sensors are compatible with 99 and 00.
I have also read if replace front 02 sensor with a bosh need to be the same for rear or will get errors, also that later S40s have an adapter which i think may be because these bosch sensors have the wires wrong.
Just want to know if anyone has successfully used two bosh sensors on there 99 or do i have to bight the bullet and get NGKS that cost twice as much?

I would be looking at fuel pump issue as this is common

Thanks Deger, that was my other thought as when it does stall i can smell fuel and sometimes the engine is flooded and takes a while to start, so possibly fuel pressure regulator as well?
I recently replaced Coils and leads, plus turbo. it seems to be at the age things are starting to fail, has only just clocked over to 135,000k so its old but still a baby.

I am still concerned the 02 sensor is on the way out as shouldnt be stuck above 4v it has been slowly getting less responsive and now just stuck.
It would be good if i can get a rear Bosch and use the already owned bosh sensor in the front.
I have a TPS sensor on the way, and will also replace the coolant sensor just to make sure everything is reliable.
One interesting thing is yesterday when it stalled the coolent gauge wasnt working but reading the ecu was at 72deg

Replaced fuel pump its better but engine will still die while driving randomly, and now its hard to start, no fuel pressure until started but when turn off, the fuel pressure immediately goes to 0.
Im leading towards the fuel pressure regulator.
These things are hard to find in AUS! im not willing to go to the local parts dealer as they are always way overpriced. I mean so overpriced they can no way justify there charges, quite often i can get it overseas + express delivery and wack a 200% markup on it and still be cheaper. Last part quoted cost only $35 they quoted $380.
Everytime i look for S40 T4 fuel regulator amongst all the listing is one for a Audi TT 1.8L made by bosch at 4Bar, looks identical.
Does anyone know if the s40 T4 regulator actually functions diffidently than all the other regulators that look identical? as i know there is no fuel return line and most regulators dont like high pressure on the outlet. the s40 kinda will act in reverse to all others.
It will cost around $200 to get one from the UK or US part 9404583
Philia_Bear
Rear o2 sensor should always read lean because of the cat at 0.0 to 0.1v
Reading 5v means its broken as it should not be above about 1v ever
Sounds like wiring is shorted which can happen
Only the front sensor should be variable and centered around .5v

Where in aus are you based?
Number of local people like myself who keep known good second hand ones in stock if you want to borrow and test

Thanks, so i probably have alot going on then.
When i got the car it was blowing smoke if accelerating hard.
Service light was on so i gather it hadnt been serviced in a while, Engine looked very clean though.
I have replaced pretty much everything that would fail on it so far except FPR, O2 sensors, Cat, Coolant sensor.
So im probably expecting Dead or blocked catalytic converter too.
I am looking at ordering FPR and Rear o2 sensor as already have a bosch front one (which gave signal error) I have read if replace front one with a bosch and not the rear you can get errors as both have to be identical types.
Most parts online are for the 2000 above model. mines a 1.5 in betweener. So just would like to confirm if the rear Bosch o2 sensors will work.

Voldat in Moorabbin then.
julianvreug
Great thanks Snoopy i will give them a call.

Its Around same price as ordering online, so will look at ordering on soon
I received a canceled order by mistake for a 9146781 read its for 850, s60, s70 etc, got confused as its for engines that have fuel return line. Ones that dont have a fuel pressure damper, funny hows its called a different name between the S40 T4 and all other volvo turbos that work the same way.
THe 850T5 Fuel pressure damper is about 1/2 to 1/3rd the price of the so called T4 regulator that works supposedly the same way,the main difference is the T4 has a vacuum line on it while the 850 etc dont.

Will be snoopy. Just have to confirm part number with voldat
morgan
Rather than ordering parts not knowing if this will fix the problem take it straight to voldat , speak to john and he will make sure of the problem , order the appropriate parts and fix the problem , then no more headaches.
julianvreug
Unfortunately the car wouldn't make it to voldat.
I know the fuel pump was on way out from the noise it was making, i know the fuel regulator is gone from the fuel smell in the vacuum line. I know the rear 02 sensor is faulty as stuck on 4volts. The cat is probably blocked up by the noise the engine makes around 3500rpm.
I have a phone monitoring the OBD port constantly while driving so have a good idea whats wrong.
THe issue with the car was Previous owners looked after it well, all genuine Volvo parts etc, car was immaculate apart from a tree branch falling on it which is one of the reasons i got it cheap, i aslo believe its had a ECU remap as produces around 220HP boost is between 15 to 18psi. But when it was in the dealers hands i purchased from i dont think it was ever serviced, service light was on, oil was really old or just crap oil, Spark plug tips completely burnt out, proably running standard fuel, and i know he thrashed it. So i spent alot in getting the car up to scratch by replacing everything that may fail. its been incredibly reliable only problem i have had was when a vacuum line popped off the waste gate it destroyed the turbo (leaking Oil) and now the fuel issue.
I am thinking of when its right taking it on the ferry to the other side of Melbourne and getting it checked out by Voldat and VPTuning. The car came from Dandenong

No racv ? They will yow to to voldat
Ex850R
A tilt tray can be as little as $100 , if ye get the right guy , can look at my old contacts if you like , where are you?
John will have a tilt tray contact too.
Save the hassle.
I use the tilt tray guys instead of RACV which is a waste of money to me , i pay when i need a tow , simples...
julianvreug
I live 118Km away from Voldat, around Port Arlington area on the bellarine peninsula. Bit far out the road and RACV's distance.
Im going to take out the fuel regulator tonight to confirm part number.
morgan
Racv $120 per year , 3 tows up to 80kms and then a free taxi each time to pick up the car , works out well for me
