alphax;96911 wroteSo the problem I had running the RX-7 or Volvo calipers up front was that the rear Ford Explorer calipers are just too powerful in terms of proportioning front to rear. So much so you can't really dial it out. Most road cars are setup so that the rear brake caliper clamping force is about 50% of the front. The rear Explorer caliper is about 80%. Since the Explorer is a near 2 tonne SUV, I needed something with roughly twice the clamping force of the rear, so I started looking around at suitable OEM options from vehicles weighing between 1800-2000kg.

I settled on calipers from the Lexus LS430. It weighs almost 2 tonne, so has similar clamping force front and rear as the Ford Explorer, even though the discs are bigger.

We did this mid last year for a vw polo.
Cayenne front Brembo. Beast of brakes, let alone on a polo. Similar sized pistols, two large two small.

Thanks Gents. Shiny calipers must be the answer now that shiny wheels are no longer cool... those brakes on a Polo.. wow, would want some serious tyre.

hes burning through a set of Achilies 123 currently.
doesnt mind them, will look at something else next.

Finally got the 23mm rear sway bolted up. It's an absolute revelation compared to the 19mm. Twice the stiffness, but it seems to compliment the modified Falcon 27mm bar up front very well. Turn in is now very sharp, crisp and 2nd/3rd gear power oversteer is much more controllable

Have also been experimenting with different wheels and tyres. Tried some 17x8 alloys with some old Toyo Proxes... They seem pretty good. Clocked up almost 2,500 km's now with the driveline swap, still no issues except I notice the rear tyres seem to wear quickly!

That sounds like symptoms of a heavy foot?
The au xr8 wheels don't look bad.
Have been on the lookout for some early 240 style mudflaps. Finally found some in usable condition:

Cleaned them up... they come up quite good considering they were off a 1979 244. While at the wreckers I had a look around for suitable hardware that would help me mount them. Found these nice big washers from a Ssang Yong Musso rad support panel and these beautiful little 10mm nyloc nuts with an integrated spinny washer from a late Mondeo. Try buying those at the bolt shop!

They mounted up solid and look clean!

Bolt places definitely sell big gaurd washers, otherwise all truck places would be stuffed, wurth sell the rest fwiw.
Yes I am aware bolt shops sell washers. I have been to a bolt shop before. I was referring to the nylocs with integrated, large spinning, captive washers and the fact that they are basically free.

It's been a while since an update, so here we go! I have been making some minor and fairly major changes... more on that to come.

Moved the battery to the boot to make some room in the engine bay.

Fitted a stock LS9 cam and new chain tensioner. The tensioner install requires removal of the oil pump, which requires removal of the oil pickup which requires removal of the sump which requires removal of the front crossmember! That was fun.

The LS9 cam is made for a positive displacement blower. It has reasonable lift and very good exhaust duration with a reasonably smooth idle.

If you are not familiar with an LS, those rods you see below are 5/16th dowel rods used to prevent the lifters from falling into the sump. unlike old V8's, you cannot remove or change lifters without removing the heads. Luckily they are roller lifters anyway, so if changing to a mild cam with no crazy lift and spring pressure, you're okay to go.

Also upgraded the rocker arm Trunion's and valve springs while I was there. The stock ones with the little needle rollers you see here have a nasty habit of distributing needle rollers throughout your engine. Oh, Summit racing decided to include a semi-finished part in the package (the Black trunion pin you see below) - so they sent an entirely new set express DHL in 3 days. Can't beat that service.

Also changed the valve springs. Made a little tool to do that and spent a good couple of hours killing my back! The back two springs wedged between the brake booster and clutch master cylinder were real fun! But, did not require removal of anything other than the rocker covers and coils.

The bumper has also been receiving some modifications which will all make sense soon.

Looks good. But how will adding a positive displacement supercharger stay legal? It exceeds the capacity multiplication laws to my understanding without getting permission.

Is there no room in front of the radiator to need to put the w2a radiator in such an exposed spot?

Do you go to any car shows or events?

We have ways and means around these things Mister Vee_Que!

There is room for a slightly smaller heat exchanger in front of the radiator, but not ideal with the condenser and oil cooler in the way also. In the lower position it will be sealed off across the bottom and therefore at least a little protected and will receive maximum ducted cold airflow across it without hindering the other 3 coolers.

If it's possible to just enter/cruise up to the Ozvolvo Nats on Saturday only, I will be there.
Without hunting through the thread, 3 coolers? This doesn't have ac does it?

Yes, the Saturday is the day to go up. Entry is closing soon!

I only ask on the capacity because the further brake upgrade would have been approved as well, presumably also the engineer will give you permission to go above a technical capacity of 7l, which is why others are going for a 5.3 with a turbo in a 240!
I see you de-catted it.
Nice, Saturday it is then! I will enter today.
Yes, it has full A/C

still has Cat's, 2 up the front, one in the back :)

I re read. So you run a power steering cooler too? As a factory ve has one doesn't it? That does all take up room indeed.
Awesome build man! I look forward to seeing it in Benalla!

Cheers, looking forward to it also
