Help with 88 240 Running rich

I purchased a 88 240 for my son as a first car. Trying to get my head around why it is running so rich.

Symptoms.
Black smoke
Bad idle
Miss under load at around 2000rpm

Work done.

Remove and clean maf with maf cleaner
No leaks or holes in intake tube
Remove and clean TB replace with new gasket (was caked in black greasy crap)
Remove and clean flame trap (was blocked)
Seems to stop blowing smoke when running it with MAF Disconnected but it will not rev then
Waiting on plugs, rotor and cap to arrive.

I have read that the coolant sensor can through things out this has it under the intake manifold with a single spade connector on it. there is another which I am sure is for the gauge on the other side of the block. Does anybody no whare Resistance reading I should be getting from this sensor. I have downloaded a few green books for the injection but they all seem a little different, Cannot seem to find the right manual for this car.

Any ideas.

88 = lh2.2
Replace the stock o2 sensor with a wideband unit with narrowband output like a plx
Then adjust the set screw on the maf until it idles properly at 14.7
It is very possible as well that the maf is dead

Located in Cairns. My maf does not have a screw on it either. I am getting concerned that previous owners have put the wrong maf on it now.

Sure its not a my89? (Lh2.4)
Does it have a crank posistion sensor at the rear of the block at the back of the head

Have a look at base of the distributor, see if there is connector there with some wires coming out of it. Then check the MAF and to see what part number is on it. It should be something like 0280212007 or 0986280102.

Car has below maf and dizzy.

So I could have the wrong maf then. It would explain a lot. Looks like car has been running rich for long long time

Maf has 0280212016 plug at dzzy is on bottom left front near the timing cover. Car has no OBD code reader.

It looks like your suspicions were right. LH2.4 AFM on a LH2.2 car.

I've got a spare working LH2.2 AFM here which I can post to you. MSG me if you're interested.

I thought as much. Bloody fuel injection. Which it had carbs like my old 144

The big rubber boot under the TB etc is a culprit , they split and you never know it

You have the wrong MAF on there. Should end with 007 not 016. 007 = LH2.2 and 016 = LH2.4. Put the correct MAF on there and it will be right as rain.

Nice looking 244, you don't see many in that cream colour.

lol yes it is good nick have not even polished it yet, but it looks like the same colour as a prosthetic limb.

Update. Correct MAF arrived quickly fitted it this arvo. Running much better no smoke on idle. Little black smoke on on acceleration. Idles so much better have not taken out the 02 sensor yet to clean or replace that is a job for the weekend. Amazing difference though.

This is a bit of a project this thing. Still need to do
front and rear Shocks
Front discs and pads
oil change filter, coolant flush new top and bottom hoses
Belts are rat shit
Blower fan is dead (cold shiver runs down spine about that one)
Want to lower it and put larger rims on it, but budget constraints may kick in.
Have minor leak from rms, but the flame trap was blocked when i got it i am hoping it resolves it self now. crosses fingers.

UPDATE

Pulled o2 sensor and soaked it for a day in petrol. Fitted back in today, running like a dream now, good idle no smoke at all, fantastic result with right maf and clean o2 sensor.

Update.

Nearly got the old girl ready for RWC
New front and rear shocks
new front and rear rotors and pads
new flame trap (no more oil leaks)

Ran it a few weeks ago and the Bad idle has returned with a vengeance. Seems to miss under load around 2000rpm
Checked again for air leaks could not find any.
Replaced Engine coolant temp sensor as old one fell apart (the ECU one)
Replaced the O2 sensor as it needed it anyway.
Fuel regulator is not leaking fuel or smell like fuel when disconnecting the hose.

I am thinking the replacement maf has crapped out on me as it is having similar symptoms as before. Car will start with the Maf disconnected but I am not getting any check engine light and it will not rev with it disconnected idles badly with it disconnected

Reconnect maf restart car idles bad but will rev.

I am open to any opinions here. Really onnoying me as I can take it for RWC as soon as I can get it run properly again as everything else is done. Dropped about $800 in parts on this thing now.
