Tore the exhaust off (again) while putting it on the trailer yesterday... The front edge of the first muffler gets caught on the back edge of the trailer. Slightly mangled the middle section. :(
So as well as de-mangling it, I used an old rally trick and added an angled skid to the front and rear of the muffler.

In other news, it was randomly blowing a lot of smoke when I was moving it around the backyard. No idea why. I had planned on letting it warm up and see what happened, but mangled exhaust put a stop to that.
Any suggestions would be great. It was fine when it was taken off the trailer a few weeks back.

O2 sensor again making it go rich?

Managed to not tear out the O2 sensor this time.
And it's oil smoke.

5th today. Smoke was absent when we started it this morning?!??
Could have been 4th with a couple of things had worked out very slightly differently, but whatever.
New PB for me of 50.01, but Petey did a 49.95 in his last stint to reset his and the car's best.

They lowered the breakout time from 50.40 to 49.90, which I was a bit skeptical about but turned out to be good, considering Pete and I both did plenty of laps under 50.40...

I made contact with the normally untouchable #17 Integra. They had a new driver who was not slow, but slower than their normal pace. I'd caught him and was looking for a way past, when he ran wide on the right hander up the hill. I stuck my nose in but I don't think he realised I was there and he basically shut the door on me. I would have hit him in the driver's door, but had just enough time to back off and hit the quarter panel ahead of the rear wheel. He spun, I bounced into the infield and kept going.

We both got the 'bad sportmanship' flag on the next lap, which was fair call by Race Control. I'm basically interpreting it as "that was a legit racing incident, but don't do it again".

I went and spoke to the crew of car #17 at lunchtime (this happened just before lunch) and they were OK with what had happened but annoyed that they had gone from 1st to 2nd as a result of the spin. Oops... Fortunately, they quickly assumed the lead on the afternoon re-start, so my conscience is clear!

Turns out that we did a total of 26 laps under the old break out time. Seemed like a long way away a few months ago, now we're nearly 0.5 seconds under it.
Happy.

Still need to get more negative camber onto the LHS wheels, and less on the RHF.
Also pondering the value/plan of attack for a 2-litre.

Anyone know if a VVT head goes onto a non-VVT block? Same head gasket?

DNF today. Modified control arm broke, killed the tripod joint when hit the ground.

We welded the control arm up to put it back on the trailer, but now I have the joy of tracking down a CV/half-shaft to suit the Renault box...

The good news is that we all went faster than ever before. The car's best is now down to 49.80, and it is clear that there is still more to come from getting geometry/alignment sorted.
We qualified 9th and were running 7th when I last looked, so well on track for another top five placing.

Reno does weird things..

I'm now imagining a reno 2L tied up to a M56 so in a reno 12, 16, 8.. Hmmmmm

It was probably bound to happen eventually, it's been so reliable for so long.

The early to mid NA S40s came with a Renault gear box. It's got a too-tall diff and apparently they're weak, but the ratio gap between 2nd and 3rd gears is nice and small, which is good.

I want to fit an M56, but am not sure it will be a good move regarding the ratios.

The broken arm had been cut and had two 12mm plates welded in. Old school rally trick to get more negative camber. Weld looked good, but had poor penetration on the plate.
