It means the transmission will have been under more strain and so may have a shorter life.
Not much point asking the dealers anything. They will tell you how great the car is, when they actually have no personal knowledge about the car's history at all. If it is a Volvo dealer and the car was serviced by them you might be able to get something out of the service department, maybe.
If the car has previous owner details and they are clear enough that you can actually use them, and often they don't, then talk to the previous owner. As you are pretty new to all this, insist on being able to take the one you want to an independent to be checked (e.g. Berry, Voldat, Mason's). It will mean you taking half a day off work to do this, but it is well worth it.
It might also mean signing a purchase contract, but with a clause added by you to the effect of "subject to purchaser's approval of report conducted by (insert name of independent)". If they won't agree to taking the car to an independent walk away.

t purchased the car, a Volvo XC 90 D5 R-Design Wagon 7st 5dr Geartronic 6sp 4x4 2.4DT [MY13], with 82893 KM, for $39,500 and put subject to test drive and subject to independent inspection on the contract.

You guys think I did well? They also offered an extension to Volvo manufacturer warranty.
Do you guys think it's worth it ($2800) for the extra 4 years?
Vee_Que
I do. They can fail on a gearbox, more reason to service at a workshop though, the warrenty will say what will viod it. First is not enough services at a certified place.
Volvotech
Make sure its manufacturer extension because any Dealership warranty is a crock of shit!!!! It makes them extra money. Don't be pushed into extras by their aftersales team because they get a % !!!
Volvotech
Sounds like a nice car

It's definitely a Extension to the Manufacturer’s warranty for 5 years at $2800
Does that make it a better deal? Would I be able to get it services at any mechanic that does log book servicing?
Volvotech
Manufacturers warranty covers all components & a Dealership warranty is an outsourced insurance Company that will only cover major components & they only cover a % of the costs!!!
Servicing can be carried out by approved Motor Trade Associated workshops & your Volvo Dealership Warranty is still valid
Volvotech
I personally would still use your Volvo Dealership to service your car along with replacement warranty items but any extras like, tyres, brakes, globes, wipers, exhaust etc etc buy & do it yourself. If unsure ask on here
bumperplates
Will do! So would you not go for the extended manufacturer warranty? I would say the Volvo is past it at warranty as its a 2012 model.
Volvotech
In my opinion & experience if its a extended Volvo manufacturer warranty yes & I'd want to see proof from Volvo car Australia & if its a warranty underwitten by an insurance Company warranty no.

Fantastic!! Thanks for the assistance, and all the help over the last week!
I'll let you all know what comes from the inspection, as well as contact Volvo Australia to see if the warranty is recognised.
Vee_Que
I wouldn't do brakes yourself. Not with minimal experience, it can go wrong easily, once again. But read all the conditions before agreeing to it.

The extended manufacturer warranty company is National Warranty Company in case you wanted to know
morgan
I had a national warranty company on a Range Rover I had , make sure you read the small print as there were lots of term & conditions and didn't cover a lot of things and only partially covered other . Also had to be serviced every 5000km or 3 months otherwise warranty was void .
bumperplates
Do you think it will still be useful, or not worth it, being $2800 for 5 Years
bumperplates
What are the main issues you think I may see with a xc90 at 84000 across the next 5 years? You think 2800 can be absorbed into usual maintenance, or you think a transmission usually goes, or something electrical?
Volvotech
I believe that not to be a Manufacturers warranty thats the Dealership getting you to hand over extra $$$'s because they get a premium from your purchase, so I would recommend keeping your $2800 in your pocket. The terms & conditions of such warranties will see that you are the loser in the contract!!!
Call Volvo Australia with the vehicle details & see if there is any chance to extend Volvo Car warranty.

I didn't realise Volvo could extend their own warranty for a used car. I thought it was always based on new cars, and that was it

Also, if all goes well, what's the first thing I should do, now that I'll be part of this exclusive community :)
I'll also let you know what I find in the inspection report.
