Coolant temp sensor....Are they expensive?
egads (she/her)
Non volvo caps vary in pressure a bit too much so stick with oem if possible.

Okay so an 1800km round trip with a trailer, where half that trip the car was loaded to rated capacity, has given me a pretty clear picture of the car's health.
1. There is coolant loss, I think via the heater core.
2. PCV is blocked
3. Driver door check strap clunks like crazy
Ex850R
How was the fuel use.each way James?
At least you gave the engine a good long run to heat up and dislodge gunk, time for oil change.
The clunky check strap usually ends in broken one. Mine broke....
How was the towing experience?

1. easy fix
2. not too bad, follow the Mathew's guide. Best tip is when you remove the manifold the bottom bolts don't need to be removed. The manifold is sloted so loosen them and lift up
3. remove grease....tighten the fixing and grease.

Sounds like a really good exercise!
As the others mentioned, none of the issues you've mentioned are biggies.I certainly wouldnt be concerned. After all, we're talking about nearly 20yo cars here.
While the heater core is reportedly easy, from everyone I know who has done one, not a nightmare at all, Ive never actually done one. I'm debating doing mine as part of preventative maintenance.
Rob
It is very, very simple. There really is nothing tricky about it at all.
nickm
PCV is a lot more involved than the heater.
Ex850R
Flame trap is just a matter of plodding along the heater core easy but buy a Volvo genuine part as others don't fit quite as well or stink for months....

The check strap is actually quite serious. Well it's fixable, but it needs more than some oil. The welds that hold the strap bracket to the door frame have failed and it is moving around. Options are to either weld it or to drill it and put self tapping screws through it.

Seeing as I have a welder (and some paint) I think I might just weld it up.
Ex850R
Yep,welding is the best option.
Post pics of the repair?

buy more goodies from FCP.
You can buy a new check strap and they have a PCV kit. (my check strap broke, got replaced and broke again, bought a replacement and it went with the car)
There is even a video tutorial on the PCV kit.
took about 2-3-4 hours ?
Good time to replace the intake and TB with a NA one if you can get one ;)
Heater core, no idea :)
Ex850R
Got my core from UK,PFS,Partsforvolvonline.
Got a radiator too! Still cheaper than here.

re: the strap seems that there is a common weak point on the door.
When it gets a bit sticky the door fails.
Maybe tack a washer to strengthen the steel around the mounting point
Ex850R
The weld heat affected zone is the weakest point,it,just beside the weld. If you can put a compensator plate on first, spread out the stress and weld strap onto that it will last longer.

@Ex850R cheers for the referral I'll get a new heater core soon.
Ex850R
@James , check the postage costs compared to getting from the USA guys , it seems that its cheaper when i look but things do change. Again , i did get a cheaper one from IPD ? It didnt fit perfectly , needed some more foam sealing tape and looked slightly smaller overall and id smell for a while even with a fair bit of use , give the core a wash with ohh , even dishwash liquid i reckon before install just to be safe on the smell side of things.

I just ordered new seat skins for the 850. OH GOD MY WALLET
jamesinc
So the 850 had the classic "Failed check strap weld" clickety-clack when you open and close the driver's door. I opted for the self-tapping screw solution rather than the weld solution, as I only have gasless MIG and it is a bit messy.
Anyway who is the absolute legend who designed the door hinges on the 850? Just unplug the harness connector, slacken the two retaining screws and slide the door off. Put it back on and it aligns perfectly! Awesome x 10000!!

Brilliant! Are the skins coming via Elwood?
Disappointingly, they werent interested in doing V70R seat skins for me, though they did respond quite quickly.
