Oh waiting for the mechanic to call is a horrible game to play at the office. I'm not being very productive today..

So more fun. The rear seat restraints, ie that clip the rear seat base in the upright position, well previous owner had removed them.
I'm guessing it was it easier for him to fit his surfboard without having to manually un clip the rear seat each time. lol.
More awkwardly, I didn't check that / notice it when I was looking over her :S
If the stars align it will be tomorrow.
Spac
The base doesn't have clips. There's a lump on the back of the base that just stuffs down under the bottom of the backrest.

Hmm I'm not sure I know what I'm talking about know. I was trying to articulate the moveable back rest, that one would lay flat when shopping at Ikea?
In other news, I had my motorbike (Yamahahaha 2009 XJ6) for sale partially to fund expected repairs of this thing, and it sold :(
Speaking of selling things. getting spare keys cut for these things. I suppose they are ECU programmed somewhat, and there is a limit of active keys the ECU can register? Off to a Volvo dealer for me?
Chris
Probably have to be Volvo. If you have the transponder it can be put in a new shell, but yes typically locksmiths can't read the chip and replicate it.

Seriously?
Our local key cutting kiosks in the mall can read/copy an existing transponder key for most brands. Must be a volvo specific thing.
Chris
Yep, I went through this with our 99 V40. They all said they could do the earlier ones, but Volvo changed the coding from somewhere in 99 and after that they can't read it. Several tried mine and none could do it. Lucky for me I could salvage the chip and get a new shell and key - $60.

just as well I got two working keys with my 2001 S60 then.
That's a good point that you can just swap the chip across if you have the old key and it is either the blade or the electronics that are broken.
Incidentally, if anyone wants working key fob remotes for a 2000 S40, i have two spare that will not be used. Don't know if they can easily be programmed to a different car, but they are just sitting in our key basket doing nobody any good right now. The plastic casings are cracked, but buttons and internals are fine.

I'm not sure where to get this done but there is a UK site that can cut the key from the key code.
Then you need vida/vice and subscription to reprogram the ECU to match the chip.
The key can be cut from a blank if you have an old key with the chip you remove the old chip and the new blank has a little slot for it..
I think the ECU can store up to 4 keys.
Fobs are another story you need a specific code with then (supplied when new) to get it to match.
The older method of turning on and off the ignition to recognise the fob will not work.

Well my $1000 Volvo passed a road worthy after I threw $1700 at it. L-)
In my defence. There were a lot of annoying things that would have taken me ages to do, and you know, I just want a car. :S
My real Fail was to not book Vicroads for an inspection. I could have sworn the last time I did this I just rocked up with all the papers and that was that, perhaps that's not what happened :( I was living in Albury at the time... ah I see the problem.
My date is now Tuesday the 24th. Which is good as it means it will be sorted for that Tuesday as I have a band rehearsal, and the weekend where I need to drive to Bendigo. (Brass Band competition, awwww yeah)
Berry's is still good. after draining my wallet they stopped to make sure I knew what had happened, Kinda like a cuddle after the shock of your first time. I appreciated that.
Oh the surprise broken bit was a bolt missing from the right hand rear calliper. It just wasn't there. I really need to have a proper look at things before I get in and drive them :S
bowie
Back to keys for these things. I have a little, what I assume was a radio fob with a cover missing that doesn't seem to do anything, and a single key that only works the central locking whilst in the drivers door. Is that pretty much normal?
Jock, I'm interested in your fobs. I'm unsure what to do with them right now but I feel they make come in handy towards the future :P Kinda like as you pick up all the ammo you can you find before a boss fight and then it wasn't that bad.
Chris
Key operated central locking driver door only is normal on your model, originally came with 2 identical Volvo branded keys. Phase 2 got remote locking. $2,700 is fine for a roadworthy example, they all need work at that age
bowie
Good to know something else at least is not broken. *nods* Alright. time to read about these keys.
And yes so far the entry price isn't stupid. Part of that service was an engine mount, Berry tells me it will chew many more. Actually they aren't so dear.
Spac
Engine mount solution:
Thoroughly clean the mount.
Fill the voids in the rubber with urethane goo.
Allow urethane goo to set.
Reinstall and be happy.
This works on new or used mounts, but you may need a big cable tie to hold the sleeve back into place while the goo dries (if the mount has already collapsed). I cannot feel any additional vibration - in fact, it is considerably smoother than a tired mount, particularly on gear changes.
bowie
Urethane goo is magic after all. I'll keep that in mind next time one becomes spongy.
Oh, the lower gearbox mount was replaced too, that wheel no longer scrubs turning on left lock.
bowie
Well the S40 is already perfect
That's a brand new Bach 50AF3 sat length wise in the boot of the this S40. Indeed this was the principle purpose of this Volvo. Carrying a Bass Trombone :D
To celebrate the Trombone fitting so well in the boot, I buried my foot at the lights and the permit flew of the dash and landed in the back seat.
This car is going to be fun.

Yes. This is correct.

S40's are so cool.
My crush (Amanda Tapping, Stargate SG1) Even drives one in series 6 :D

Oh the real reason Why I came here.
I went to repco thinking I'd go home with a bunch of filters, they wanted $110 for fuel filter and about that again for an air filter! PLeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease!
Many more googlings required by I.
