Hello - what oil do i use for this car - the book says A1 0w30 the Castrol websits says a3b4 0w40
VolvoDeger
I use 0w-30 always on these
andyp
I just rang Castrol - they assure me 0w 40 exceeds all possible requirements and is what they recommend. I guess I just stick to that
andyp
Castrol EDGE 0W40 A3 B4 - It is
Ex850R
Penrite is great too.
andyp
Thanks - I just want to stick to the factory recommendation - there is so much oil confusion out there due to turbos and sludge and change intervals etc
Ex850R
Oil today is all good. Just don't put supermarket oil in and hope for a long life.
Repco brand is Penrite as well.
Ex850R
If you go factory you could buy Volvo brand oil , if you can afford it.....
andyp
isnt that castrol ?
andyp
The oil cap says "we recommend castrol" and I rang castrol and they assured me 0w40 is they way to go - I think that should be ok. it was purchsased 10/2006 so i understand the timing belt will need to be done this year in october - the car has done 105k kms Is this correct
andyp
rontons in Adelaide told me 12 years but the internet says 10 years - for timing belt
VolvoDeger
Mick at Rontons you can trust as I deal with him every day, volvo service schedule says 10 years or 150,000 klms is what I do. Later cars show 180,000klms
0w-30 oil have been using it on all these cars but only done about a few thousand of these but what would I know, just been doing these volvo's for about 38 years now.
Philia_Bear
Penrite 10w50 HPR10 unless you live in tas, then HPR5
I'd never use 0w30 in it... its only there so that Volvo can cheat on fuel economy/emission tests much like VW et all, protection is very poor compared to HPR10
andyp
rontons told me they dont look at time but change the belts based on Kms - he said I can go to 185k I told him I will change in within the next 2 years just because they have a time based interval as well. He said not to use Castrol - he used Valvoline and has been using it for 39 years - I think 5w40. He said change the oil every 5k.
Philia_Bear
The belts break down over time and exposure
Its a serious thing to do at time or KM
Really it should be a hours meter thing like on marine motors
andyp
What brand Deger? do you use?
andyp
yeah I am not going to 185kms it will be 20 years old - There would not be a time interval if it wasnt important would be my view - Rontons seemed to not be concered at all about it - they said i can wait years.
sucksqueezebangblow
i was going to use Castrol Edge 0w40 a3 but bought 20l of Mobil 1 0w40 - heaps cheaper.
andyp
Looks like Ill be using the Valvoline Rontons use
Ex850R
I have said this before , my very low mileage 850R didn't like the mobil1 at all.
It worked better with castrol synthetic.
My later x70 turbo cars seem happier with mereril or semi synthetic although I am going to Penrite/Repco full syn for the V70R and see how it fares.
The whiteblock is certainly a finicky thing in many areas.
