I don't think it's hard to get a matching seat. Not of much use to you but here in Melbourne Imlachs had a near perfect black interior for ages (may still do). I see plenty of XC70s for wrecking so your chances are good
Philia_Bear
Melb has a much cheaper volvo wrecking scene than syd

When I was at Jollys getting S70 bits I saw an XC that had the blue int , someone had got the driveshaft and haldex or whatever. Thing is all the parts are mostly priced generally so a motor is $270 (iitc..)
I was sorely tempted on an Lexus IS300 motor and manual box to store for a 240 conversion , one day......They had so many good cars that day , all rotated out to crusher now. So cheap!
Chris
Yes, I'm surprised Sydney is more expensive. Like Snoopy says, you see so much tempting stuff here, but then a few weeks later it's in the crusher...
Kaisa
So... i got my XC70 back from the mechanic. Not as bad as I thought at all, but quite a few bigger things need fixing in the months to come.
* There is oil in the turbo unit and most likely need to change that in months to come.
* Left CV outer boot has split. (doing it next month)
*Radiator top hose needs to be changed (next month)
But the biggest surprise was what the mechanic told me about the headlight. He said there was no lamp in it and the side fender had been repainted indicating that this car has been in some sort of a accident. He said someone has tried to mess about with the wires on the drivers side and the problem was not in the bulb, but the resistor. So I will be taking to the car also to an auto electric to fix that one up.
Otherwise the car was in ok shape. I do have to change my seat because he said it might not pass the rego :(
Philia Bear- if you still have the seat and have plans to bring the car to Sydney I would buy it from you :)
Ex850R
Do all the hoses , don't stinge on cooling , these cars will do a gasket quick smart.
Oil in the turbo? Did it blow smoke?
Get a used one off anyone , Mike and Mark both will have.
You will get some oil there in the intercooler pipes and inlet area cos the pcv breather pumps the oil mist back in , it could be that , I wouldn't jump in and change it unless it blows smoke.
Philia_Bear
Turbo oil is 95% going to be the pcv and not the turbo
Your mechanic does not know volvos or the Xc70 well enough
Do the Cv boot now unless you want to be up for a big bill soon for a new shaft
They die very quickly after the boot goes
The top hose is like $15
Why not do it now?
Ex850R
I think I mentioned earlier , if they don't do Volvo , no matter how good a mechanic then you are going to get the wrong advice and big bills for things that are not in need of fixing. Go to an individual shop that knows Volvo....
Ex850R
OR.
They are trying to rip you off.
Kaisa
Yeah, I actually have a few mechanics near my office (Northmead) that do European cars and have seen plenty of Volvos there as well. I picked the one yesterday because he also does servicing on my partners S40. I will have to bring it to a mech next week to do the hoses as I do not want to be in trouble after. I was looking at the Lupica mechanic, but its all the way down in Moorebank area which is a bit of a drive for me.
I wanted my mechanic to do everything yesterday, but he did not have the parts there. I will call up a few places today to get the car done next week.
On a good note, he did flush the transmission.

Modern Volvo is a bit different to the knowledge on these ones too. The tricks learned.....
I drive all the way accros Melbourne , 40 mins or so to get the best service (if not doing it myself) plus its cheaper parts and hourly rate.
I get a loaner Volvo too although an old whacked out 740 used to be mine it seemed , put me off 740s of any sort! Ha!

In the UK I used to travel about 90mins (Blackpool to the Lake District) to get my car serviced because I trusted that dealer. I had a couple of local places that were good for doing little bits and pieces, but on the whole it was travel to somewhere I trusted.
Bottom line is, they're funny cars in some ways that need someone who knows what they're doing beyond the normal workshop knowledge.
Kaisa
That's a fair point. :)
I did go to a mechanic near me (Parramatta Prestige ) to check their availability, but I will call up Lupica and see if they can do the hoses for my car next week. I also have to go to an auto electrician as the drivers side headlight is not getting power (resistor) and also suspect the radio/speakers might be part of the same issue. Only the front dashboard speaker works in 3ch and dolby. I read it might be the amp, but no idea.
About the turbo- I'm not too worried about what he said about the leak/oil and when I take the car to Lupica I will ask them to have another look at it.
But the seat needs to be done before the next rego. :D
Ex850R
I am no expert but i think connecting to the Volvo softwre diagnostics will tell you whay is wrong with the electrics and radio so that independant Volvo shop should be able to help there and get their own Sparky to fix it?
Kaisa
Yeah, that would be great. It would then save me from taking it to someone else.
I will ask him if he could do that and see what the damage is going to be. Who knows what else it will come up with :(
Ex850R
It will be fine.
Once the bits are sorted it will be a great long term thing.
At least you didn't buy a Jeep....
Philia_Bear
I'm pretty sure Lupica can fix the headlight
timbo
$5500 is too much... how does a dealer sell you a car that cant pass roadworthy eg: seat and headlight?

Yeah....
Kaisa
I was in a bit of a rush and did not think as clearly as I should have :( They agreed to still help if anything major was going to happen to the car (trans, turbo), but to be honest I am not counting on that. It depends on the cost of the auto electrician , it may be still ok.
I don't mind spending a bit on a worthy car, but it will all depend on what the Lupica mechanic tells me.
Snoopy- Funny thing, I was actually looking at 1997-2003 Jeep Grand Cherokees few months prior and just before buying the XC70 I was also on the market for a Chrysler Voyager(1999-2004) which is a pretty ok car (my dad has one with 391Km on it and still works fine).
