Space saving spare wheel for a 240 Wagon

Tired of trying to refit the spare wheel cover over the full sized wheel. Is there space saving options that we can use??

Yes, a smaller sized tyre will be a looser fit

I have an old 14 inch rim with a 14/60/185 tyre. I am trying to reduce weight and thought a space saver may help.

Ravanelli Yeah I guess a space saver might help a bit. I don't recall seeing space savers in the 240s here in AUS, but they did use them in the USA. They weren't like todays tiny space savers…more like a 14 inch steel wheel with a slightly smaller tyre that was more of a rounded cross section.

185-60-14 is three profile sizes smaller and one width size smaller than the factory spare that car came with

What’s the exact problem you’re experiencing in trying to fit it or it’s cover?

I am really trying to reduce weight. Thought that there may be a space saving tyre for another car that fitted the 240

Ravanelli Just remove it…some of us with modern cars don't have a spare tyre! Just pray you don't get a flat! 😉

You won’t save that much weight with a space-saver, compared to the can-of-goo and 12V tyre-inflator doohickey.
It won’t get you out of every sticky situation that the spare would, but should do most, and many new cars are sold with this.
Also means you can leave your jack and tyre-iron out. 🙂

Surprised a C70 wheel has the offset to work, even in such a limited fashion?

Have you thought about the incredible shrinking spares that came standard in the 79 242gt. I know you will need a small compressor. I carry a plug kit and 10 co2 cylinders ( for soda syphons ) with the adaptor in my xc90 because the spare wheel is crap and generally a nail is easy to remove and plug even without removing the wheel. Just a thought. Bill

I can’t imagine a >46yo 242GT spare can be safe. Tyre rubber just doesn’t last that long.

Forg Not to mention, the OP is trying to reduce weight. I don't think the expanding 242GT tyre and wheel would weigh any less than a standard 240 space-saver spare tyre…and you'd have to carry a tyre inflator as well, which adds a small amount of weight.

IIRC the Virgo was the lightest of the factory wheels. Anthony Hyde's site used to have the wheel weights on it.
AFAIK the 242GT space saver spare was of reduced diameter, since most GTs didn't have 'butt cheeks' for storing wheels.
