OK, here's definitive proof that shows that the pads sent from Auto8 are in fact Girling pads:

I'd like someone, anyone, to dispute that the calipers I have on the rear are Girling, that the pads I've been sent are Girling but the only pads that will fit are the ATE/DB2 pattern, not to sound argumentative 😉

I'm confused. When you say the new pads don't fit your Girling calipers, what do you mean? Are they too wide, too thick, etc? I find that I often have to file off a bit of the edge paint coating to get them to slide in. Can you please measure the slot width in your caliper as shown below and report back? The pics below are a Girling rear caliper and suitable pad. It measures about 63.x mm, so I believe the pads you have are the correct Girling pads for your Girling calipers.

Further, yes, I believe you can fit the ATE pads to Girling calipers…and some people do this by mistake especially in AUS as most 240s in AUS that I have seen have Girling rear calipers, and most of the later 240s in the USA had ATE rear calipers as the ATE caliper was the only one available with the USA rear crash axle snubber mounting feature, which was not required in Australia. So lots of people order pads from the USA (me included in past!) and get the ATE pads instead of Girling pads.

The caliper has the same width as yours +- 63mm across the width but the measurement of the replacement pad across its width is heading towards 64mm. I had the pads from Auto 8 all packaged up and ready to return today with the free return label attached (thank you Auto 8) and thought bugger it, ripped it open and the measurement when taken across the manufacturing burrs is actually over 64mm. Needless to say I have taken to the pads with a file and removed the offending burr (not paint or any other coating), you would have had to smack that pad in with a hammer to insert it without adjusting both sides (of each pad), a pad binding in the caliper would be a pretty crap arrangement, so finally a result! Many thanks for all the input and tolerating the grumpy old man behind the keyboard 🙂

Porkchop Yay! yep, you've done exactly what I've had to do in the past to get them to fit. I usually run the sides on my belt sander to clean them up and remove the burrs. All good and mystery solved!

I expected paint etc but not some extra metal, shows how long it is since I've had to do any work on the rear brakes too!

Now I wonder if I'm getting punk'd by brake pads! I have a spare set of rear pads in my parts stash, I'll go compare them

I got double-punked, first by wrong pads on the correct caliper then right pads ,correct caliper, and pads being being slightly ill-manufactured 😉

Okay I checked over everything and corrected the pad part number, it is Bendix DB538 for Girling rear callipers.

For posterity, Girling front callipers accept both a DB549 and a DB1173 pad, the only difference is the 1173 pad itself is curved along both top and bottom edge, whereas the 549 is only curved along top edge.
