Rear Brake Pads 240 Estate

It's a busy life but I can't ignore the fact that the rear brakes are making the kind of noises that precede potentially scored rotors. I'm after a set of rear brake pads for my 1984 2.3 Estate, is there a quick way of ascertaining the caliper manufacturer (Girling or ATE) from VIN etc to match it with the correct pads and where/who online do the members get their replacements from, I'm in Tas….

Pads aren't hard to find - Tas Brakes are local. FCP Euro aren't.

Only nuisance is that they are in Lonnie and I'm in Hobs… but I was imagining them being shipped from somewhere in Oz regardless…

You local SCA might have them; your local Repco, Auto One, or Bursons should also stock them.
On the mainland, try Berry's or Monash Prestige in Melbourne.

Definitely Girling, the images you posted made it dead easy although the spring retainer is different on mine (doesn't look like either ATE or Girling). Ebay Bosch $40.70 posted free to Tas, Burson in Kingston Tas might have one manufacturer not the other (but they can't seem to ID this yet) for $105....

OK now things get really weird, finally had time to pull the pads on the Estate and the only way I can explain this is by posting a series of images:

The new pads sent by the Ebay seller are excellent quality Bremtec to compensate me for the stupid delays caused by Aramex's incompetence, only problem is they are obviously not the correct fitment and must be therefore ATE?? The rear caliper pictured on my car corresponds to Girling and the spring retainer doesn't seem to relate to either... Bloody confused!

There is more than one type of caliper.

I have the correct brake pad pin and spring kit for your vehicle.

Well I've got an axle set of quality pads via Ebay but they don't fit the calipers so I'm still embroiled in a game of ping-pong at the moment. Riddle me this: how can I have a pair of Girling calipers on the rear that take ATE pads.

I was completely aware that there are two manufacturers of calipers and they had to be either ATE or Girling, I just needed visual confirmation to be able to order the correct fitment. If you look at the photo originally posted by Major Ledfoot and look at my photo you can see that they correspond with a Girling set-up (but the pads correspond to ATE)...

It’s quite possible that a previous mechanic installed the incorrect brake pads.

The pads I pulled are obviously for an ATE caliper having done a lot of research on this (by now), the point is that the new ones I was supplied for a Girling caliper are too big to fit in my Girling caliper which it is unmistakeably.

I get your point but how can I have a Girling that only fits ATE pads?

Those pads you’ve been sent look like they’re for a 740-940.

They take different pads to a 240 even though the calipers are girling.

That’s what I mean when I mention there is more than one type of girling rear caliper

Also the picture showing the difference in caliper types is incorrect. They show a front caliper pin kit with the long thin springs, those are only on the front girling calipers

They are exactly the same measurements as the pads I was sent allowing for the coat of paint on the sides, 240 fitment.

You were sent ATE pads but you have Girling callipers. I have had this happen to me, parts systems get it wrong sometimes. The pads you want are Bendix DB538 or equivalent.

The reference image at the top showing ATE v Girling calliper is missing the retainer bracket that you found when you removed your pads.

jamesinc So I'm not actually going insane, James you have put my mind at ease, agreed that the pads I require are the DB2. Scrolled further and read with interest the post by Major Ledfoot, it gets even more interesting. If you look at this admittedly US YT clip at around 0:38 you can see that both the caliper and the pads are ATE, they are the same as the pads I hauled off my Girling caliper, the Girling pads that Auto 8 supplied are too wide and a different pattern to the ones I removed and can't be forced into the caliper (and yet are both Girling apparently).

After plowing though the parts books and Google-Fu'ing, I've found that:

Over the years, the 140/164/1800/240 rear Girling OE pad kits have had the part numbers 272567 (asbestos), 272674, 272780, 272876, 275895 (asbestos, taxi), 270164, and now 31261184 is the latest part number.
A Google search on 'volvo 270164 bremtec' lands on a rolan . com .au ad for Bremtec BT1043TS pads, which is what the OP has....
I've tried to do a lookup on the Bremtec web site, but the page won't load / is playing silly buggers.
Years ago, I recall finding the Volvo calipers on the Girling brakes site. Wish I'd kept notes &/or bookmarks, because that site had wonderfully detailed engineering drawings of their brake calipers, including the precise pad measurements.
The 900 94+ rear Girling calipers use the 271824 pad kit. Thus they take a different pad to 240s. A Google search on 'volvo 271824 bremtec' doesn't land anything worthwhile on a quick search. So it seems the Bremtec BT1043TS kits aren't for 700s/900s with rear Girlings.

I've never heard of Bremtec before tonight, so I have no experience with this brand of pad.
