1983 245 B46 Driveshaft UJoints

I'm confused. my car has 3 identical universals on the drive shaft. They are numbered in the casting GKNZ5JGS.. (I think that's right, the casting is pretty illegible).
They were tough to get out, not much room to slide before they struck the webbing. Are they the originals?

I ordered new ones, The parts shop swear there should be two types on an '83 245 B46. One for the front. The back two the same. The front one that they proposed looked right (Toyo K5-L4R). It does fit, although the shafts are quite a bit shorter end cap to end cap, than the ones I took out. The new Toyos are 75.5mm end cap to end cap. The GKNs that came out of the car are 82mm.

Questions: does the length matter? Given the GKNs were so hard to remove, are they the wrong model and length? Are the Toyos the correct part? (Being 4.4mm shorter they will be easier to install).
Can anyone tell me what part number to order for one of the mainstream brands (Spicer, SKF etc).

You need to replicate the new joints to the original ones.

Forget the parts store.

Take the original joints to a proper, driveshaft repair company like hardy spicer or other.

There are three different sized joints for the 240 and there is no way to order the right size for your car (there is no specification that suits a certain model it’s up to which diameter driveshaft you have and you cannot tell without measuring it) without comparing to what you removed

There are two types of 240 driveshaft with respect to U-joints. You determine which one you have by measuring the diameter of the front half of the driveshaft.

1310 (a.k.a. the 2" driveshaft) - all 3 u-joints the same
1310/1140 (a.k.a. the 1.75" driveshaft) - front two u-joints 1140, rear u-joint 1310

The 1140 U-Joints are Volvo #672037

The 1310 U-Joints are Volvo #3520997

I don't know the aftermarket numbers, but that's all there is to it. I normally use SKF bearings because of the whole SKF/Volvo thing, you can get them from RockAuto for a good price. You will see there they describe them as being for the 2" or 1.75" driveshafts.

Does the same data apply for the centre bearing James?

ramrod yeah same deal, the centre bearing is determined by the diameter of the front half of the driveshaft.

1.75" centre bearing is Volvo #181549
2" centre bearing is Volvo #1221635

The same is also true for the centre support donut, there's a 1.75" and 2" version, and it's also true for the rubber bellows that keeps dirt out of the splineshaft between the front and rear driveshaft sections.
