As for that brake bar near the firewall? Ah, yeah, heh - it's how Volvo managed to standardise the mounting of the brake booster and master cylinder on the left-hand side of the engine bay, even in RHD cars - by adding that bar to act as a lever from the RHD brake pedal to the brake booster.
As Angus mentioned, earlier 140s had a great long brake booster extension on the RH side (like in
this example from Paul
@cset's presently-for-sale 1970 144) but that setup looks to me like it could potentially cause serious problems for the driver in a moderate front-ender.
So for my build, I'm at the drawing board, wondering what kind / type of brake booster will fit on the RH side of the car.
