I've changed the front seals cam, intermediate and crank

Two out of three are fine but cam seal is weeping a little. I don't think I set it back in the seat far enough.

Is it possible to reseat it without taking the timing belt completely off?

I am hoping I might be able to get the belt/cam and intermediate and crank to tdc and lock the belt off then remove the cams' toothed sprocket so I can reseat the seal. When installed it I locked off the belt with vice grips onto the intermediate and crank sprokets.

Or should I use a new seal? I luckily have a few spares.

No, the seal is independant of everything. In other words tapping the toothed pulley and hence camshaft backwards does nothing (well a fraction of movement) but won't move the seal position.
    ideally you start again, but..
Tricky situation - if your ultra careful and keep the belt tensioned upwards at all times you could remove the upper gear do your work and slip back on - with suitable position marks in many locations for confidence.
3 Marks - (for those who dont know). With a new Volvo specific 240 belt, there are 3 lines at intervals. These align with with the 3 refence marks on crank intermediate shaft and camshaft cover rear mark.
Howvever, they only align once when all 3 shaft gears are postioned correctly, one engine started they do a mathematical change of position.

Anthony I must have worded that badly. No I wouldn't attempt to tap the cam sprocket.

Yeah, That's how I will approach it. Lock off the belt at TDC, lots of marks, use lock tool on the cam sprocket. I'll just have to bend the black plastic shield out of the way.

Just a side note…the Volvo branded timing belt (round tooth) on my car only has one mark. I assumed it was for the cam position mark. I locked the cam in position to keep tension then threaded around the intermediate, crank and tensioner. I know they usually have the 3 marks. Anyway it worked out fine but having the other marks would have eased my mind.

Ramrodfunk use lock tool on the cam sprocket

Hi. New to Oz Volvo and I am just New to Volvos (thanks to my wife). My Question from your great Answer to Ramrodfunk. is, What is "lock tool on the cam sprocket"? Is this a special tool I will need to reset my Cams? cheers

Ant What model car, year model, and engine?
