Hi guys, I'm new here, howdy.

As per title, I'm looking for ZF steering racks to suit 240 series cars.

Ideally I'd like to find 3 x racks, which may be a big ask. Condition not important, so long as corrosion isn't out of control. Apparently 2 different ZF racks were fitted to 240's, either is suitable for my needs.

I have 5 x 240's ( 4 are now only wrecks), and not a single ZF rack among them, so I'm concerned that this may end up being a mission. Any advice or tips will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance from a guy that grew up driving 240's, and has just returned to the fray.

I'm near Toowoomba in Qld, but happy to pay freight to me.

Why the need for ZF rack? The CG (cam gear) rack is equally as good, as is the later year TRW alloy rack

They’re all similar and carry out the same job, I believe the condition is more important (the rack itself can wear out) and when the boots tear water and dirt can intrude causing corrosion and damage to the internals

Hi ramrod, the ZF racks are larger through the pinion body, allowing for machining and installation of a larger pinion, which is why the Cam/TRW racks don't suit my needs.

If anyone out there had a tired ZF rack, I could contribute towards a replacement refurbished rack in exchange for their ZF, or whatever works.

Cheers

Maybe check if @iceton1975 has a line on any, I think they're out there but of the 20 or so 240s I've been under I don't think I've ever seen a ZF rack, they seem to be much more common in LHD markets.

I don't recall ever seeing one and I have had my head under more 240's than I can count

Thanks guys, even though I am greatly disappointed 😞

I know that the ZF was available in rhd markets, but perhaps not the Australian rhd market ? 🤷‍♂️

I'll keep scouting for a bit, but may have to go another direction if I have no joy.

Cheers

Everyone is right, ZF is a left hand market item.

I researched this some years ago.
As the UK is the only RHD country in Europe and Americas, UK company Cam Gear supplied Volvo for three generations of versions:
-: Cast iron 1975-77,
-: half cast iron half aluminium alloy 1978-81 @ 8.5kg.
-: Aluminium alloy with steel sleeves 1982-86
->> Then UK company TRW buys Cam Gears Ltd.
-: TRW racks Aluminium alloy with steel sleeve over centre tube 1988 onwards. @ 6kg

Volvo Australia had an exchange scheme where you returned in advance any old rack and you received a brand new TRW for around $400 back then, the best bargain ever. The TRW racks are hard to beat.

Thanks Anthony.

Sellholm have told me that they have modified rhd racks in the past, so they exist.

But it appears they don't exist in Aus, or evidently the U.K.

I can't think of other rhd markets apart from Asia, which I can't imagine was a volume market for 240's.

I'll ask Sellholm where their customers with rhd ZF racks were from.

There are other options, but the ZF rack is the easiest.

Cheers
