What fuel pump are you using? The D-Jet electric pump will be too much for the Strombergs.

If you're using a standard OE type mechanical fuel pump on the LH side of the engine, you'll need to make sure the spacer [4], p/n 460678-6, is in place and isn't broken.

The only pump engaged is the engine mechanical one. When I test it, it squirts fuel through rather than a constant flow like the electric ones. Not sure if this is normal. I'll take it apart and replace the spacer and gaskets or maybe replace the whole pump. If this isn't the problem - I'm running out of options. Appreciate your advice.

It is; that's what mechanical pumps do. Each squirt is enough to top up the fuel bowl in the carb. The faster the engine runs, the more squirts it makes. If the car's been sitting for a while, it needs to crank a bit longer when starting to top up the fuel bowls.

Well, after new fuel pump, redoing carbbies, finally got a new coil and got it started. It won't idle well as it still needs timing and carbbie adjustment. Tried to start again today and after a click, no power - completely dead. Battery is fine but no power. Is it the starter motor or a fuse?

The battery could be too low, but otherwise it would be either an issue with the starter or an issue with electrical ground.

Things to try:

Check battery voltage
Check resistance from block to battery chassis and chassis to battery negative
Disconnect, clean and reconnect wiring to the starter
Disconnect, clean and reconnect the block ground strap
Clean battery terminals

The most common fault is the contact at the back of the key. Turn the key to the II position and make sure you have lights on the dash. Get a blade screwdriver and bridge out the large terminal and the small terminal (sometimes a spade terminal) on the starter motor and see whether the old girl turns over.
