You may remember that a while back I found this car in Campbelltown

The seller wanted $200 for it. He's now contacted me saying that if he still has it by the end of the month he will have to scrap it. It seems a shame to me, for a working, driveable 240 to just be scrapped.
So unless someone in Sydney wants it, I'm half considering either buying it for parts, or to fix up a bit and then sell it on, to save it from death.
If I were to buy it for, say, $100, it'd probably cost me another $150 to get it home (in travel, petrol, rego permit) then probably another $400 at least in repairs, then $300 to put 3 months rego on it. So I'd probably end up spending north of $900 on the car to get it on the road. How much, roughly, do you think I'd be able to hypothetically sell it for?
Basically, is it a crazy idea? What are your thoughts?
(I'd be doing that to save the car from an undeserved death, and to try and get my time back in money in the process.)

That looks like it's worth saving. It belongs to someone on here, I can't seem to find his profile. But he advertised it on here a few months ago.

The seller's name is Terry if that helps at all.
I just remembered that he also told me the heater blower motor was stuffed - I'm not too keen on changing one of them so perhaps it's not worth it? I'd still consider it for parts but it's not like parts are hard to get either.
Would there be anyone on here interested in buying it perhaps? Should I put it up in the Radar section?

I'd like to get it but I'm in vic. I did the hater fan motor on my '87 240, it wasn't too bad.

I've read about it a bit; my understanding is that it would probably take a good weekend for a beginner (ie, me). Which would probably be pretty frustrating given I wouldn't be keeping the car. (It wouldn't really be saleable with a stuffed heater, would it?)

It's character building and you'll learn *loads* about the way your car gos together. It'll also teach you patience.

I can lend a hand if you do the blower motor in Sydney. It requires you to pull the dash but it's pretty easy to do actually. One of the easiest cars to work with.

I know this really isn't relevant to the thread but I didn't want to start a new thread - how much would you say a set of 5 Scorpius alloys is worth?
(And I haven't really seen any 240s with them on, I know it's a matter of opinion but would you choose them or Virgos given the choice?)

Looks good, although I'm not sure how I'd get it across the Bass Strait, especially without a timing belt. If I lived in Tassie I'd buy it!

take a timing belt and a spanner in your pocket, chuck it on the spirit and then drive it back on a permit!

To be honest I'd love to do that, but I don't really have the time to do that sort of thing at the moment unfortunately.
Might make a good project for someone else on here though....

I got a call back from the guy with the 240 here in Canberra that I mentioned previously. He said he took it for a RWC and it needed something done to the struts, and the steering rack was loose which will apparently require replacing. He said he'd get a quote on it this afternoon (although he wasn't clear if he'd add it to the price of the car or not ) but how much would you say needs to be spent on it?

An update -
The seller got a quote for $650 to fix it. He said he'll get it done and then sell the car to me for $1750.
Sounds fairly good I reckon, that's probably not too much to pay for a car in good condition, good mechanical condition, and with a RWC, don't you think? (I found out that the timing belt was also done 20,000 kms ago which is good.)

Too late now unfortunately, I think he has the car in now to get done.
Not a big deal though, I think I'm still getting a reasonable deal.
