ramrod What is the engine number please?
So few people know how to read that correctly….. Especially (as I have found out the hard way) certain states' registration inspectors!
The engine number of a B20 consists of 3 parts:
- The "49" which is cast into the block
- The first following four stamped digits, which form the engine's part number
- the second stamping of 1 to 5 digits, which indicates the engine's serial number.
So a B20 engine number of "49 8280 484" would indicate it's a B20E engine, as fitted to a RHD 1972 1800E or ES, in front of an M41 transmission, and that engine is the 484th example built of p/n 498280. (Lookup tables for the engine part numbers are found in the very first section of all Volvo pre-75 parts manuals).
The whole number needs to be considered as the serial number, because there's more than one engine with the number "484" stamped on that third place.
For example, somewhere out yonder, there is (or was once) an automatic ES with a B20E running around with the engine number "49 8281 484".
