I bought a 2001 S60 a few days ago, assuming it was reasonably tidy and I could fix it up, but it turned out the condition wasn't really what I was expecting and I decided to wreck it but now someone has suggested it would make a good rally car and now I can't stop thinking about the idea.
It's a 2001 2.4L non turbo 5sp manual, my thinking behind it being suitable for rallying is because obviously I would want manual, and this car already is, the NA engine is reasonably simple and reliable, it doesn't have a sunroof, 4C or any other P2 things that are likely to cause issues.
My questions are:
Would it be powerful enough? They make about 170HP, and weigh about 14500kg. I could increase power slightly, and hopefully reduce weight a reasonable amount.
Would FWD be a major issue?
Is it too big/heavy to be successful?
If I were to do this would people be interested in seeing progress? There doesn't seem to be a lot of P2 bulid threads in Australia.
My rough initial plan would be:
Remove the majority of the interior, fit aftermarket seats, harnesses etc, without fairly major mods I would probably be stuck with the original gauge cluster, least to start with.
Upgrade suspension using XC90 parts, poly bushes, possibly bigger sway bars off an S80 etc. I could potentially fit XC70 springs to increase ride height if need be. Fit XC90 brakes. Fit solid strut brace bushes, make rear strut tower brace. Fit some sort of better alloys with suitable tyres.
Do any necessary servicing to the engine/driveline to get it up to standard to take that sort of abuse. Fit a bigger exhaust, possibly some air intake mods.
Do a basic respray in white, because I can't stand the colour and the paint is pretty rough. Probably Fit LED driving lights.
