1990 volvo 240 gearbox

Hi all I have recently saved a vovlo 240 from a paddock out near where I live and after a few week I have finally got it running but when I shifted it to drive there was no clunk or jolt or any thing and it just sat there and did nothing I'm not sure what auto transmission is in there as I'm new to this but it is the same if I put it to reverse as well will just idle and not move at all even under acceleration if anyone can point me in the right direction to what it could be that would be very help full

As well even if I have it in drive I can still start the car it is like it dosnt know where it is

What year model is it?

That will be the single best guide to what gearbag is in it.

Have you checked the fluid level and colour?
Have you checked that the arm from the bottom of the shifter is connected to the gearbox itself?

The PNR switch is what should stop the engine from starting in gear. It lives on the RHS of the shifter mechanism, on top of the floor. I can’t see how it is related to the lack of drive.

Spac hey it is a 1990 b230f and I am very new to anything volvo like I said so I'm not to sure about any of that I just know it is unusual for a auto to start if in drive so I didn't know if that could be relevant that's all but it was getting dark as I found out fo I'll have to wait till next Friday to check it all out as for work I leave before sunrise and get home well after sunset

Spac and yeas checked the fluid looks very clean and is at the right level

How long has the car been unregistered?

When was it last driven on the paddock?

Transmissions are among the most neglected parts on cars

The fluid filter could be blocked, fluid level could be low, lots of things could be wrong there

Where abouts is the car located?

I’d say it is definitely well overdue for a service

In the spirit of getting it to move, it could just be low on ATF. I'd check the fluid level (yellow dipstick near the firewall on the passenger side) and top it up if it's low and see if that helps. It could also be totally borked, but non-engagement of gears is usually a symptom of no fluid pressure which is usually a symptom of low fluid level.

jamesinc the fluid was perfect and good colour I know it's not the linkage as when the car is off if in park I can not push it but in neutral I can so I'm just at a complete loss to what it could be it dosnt even attempt to go into any gear or reverse it just sits there

What's the coolant look like? It is oily?

It's not unknown for cars that have sat for long periods to have failures of the transmission oil coolant tube in the radiator. The tube inside the radiator tank corrodes and leaks. corrodes When they fail, the coolant then interchanges with the transmission fluid and makes a mess of the transmission.
