jamesinc Update: I’ve rebuilt the rack and it’s back in and operational. After having a few discussions with some wise colleagues, I’m pretty sure they are supposed to be split like that for easy installation. All four were the same.
The rack was refurbished at one point by Swedish Auto Spares (which I believe no longer exists) so they may have used different style teflon rings for the pinion. Everything seems to be ok so far apart from the horrid wheel alignment and using the 760 GLE rack rebuild green book covered most of what I needed for my TRW rack. Only things that were different were the passenger side inner bush seal was different and the fact that the green box shows a left hand drive rack.
As I’m only a third year apprentice I’m pretty pleased with myself for giving this a crack and I appreciate the people who organised the green book archives so it’s available for young people like myself. I was able to use a collection of different 1/2 sockets and a brass drift to knock out and fit the seals and I was very pleased with the IPD rack rebuild kit. Only thing it needs is a 32x12x10 single row bearing and the pinion teflon rings.
