1990 volvo 240 fuel pump relay

So I have brought a 1990 volvo 240 gl it was in a paddock for God knows how long it turns over but won't start I have drained the fuel and put fresh in it but I can not hear the pump priming when I turn the key I have heard alot about the relay failing but I went to search to buy one and I'm a little lost the one I have is black but online I can only find green and white ones is there a difference or do they all do the same thing ??

I got a white one from Mark for my 1991.

He is cheap, Berry Motor Group. Genuine Volvo parts have 2YR warranty, he gets a good deal from parts guys at a dealer

The relay should be white. The other relays are for other components

If you are handy with a soldering iron pop the plastic cover off the relay and look for a dead solder. As above, it is the white one.

Otherwise call Mark, he can post one out. Or your local Volvo specialist, they will have them as they often fail.

Have a look online, I recall something about jumping fuse 4 to 7 bypasses the pump relay, not sure though. Best check it out.

Assuming you have checked all of the fuses. As a rule, either pull them all out and put them back in or roll them around in their little slots. Corrosion often happens in there and breaks stuff.

If she's been sitting in a paddock for a while, I'd be draining the tank and flushing it, and also pulling the in-tank pump / fuel gauge sender and checking them out too.

I do have a little experience of what can be found inside.....

yes mine looked like that as well, tank rusted through whilst the wagon was sitting in the garage and purged its contents all over my concrete floor staining it with rusty petrol. On removing that and looking at the sender unit, it was pretty much an art form as pictured.

Yet to sort out a replacement tank and sender/fuel pump assembly…

adrianw - Eeeek, I wouldn't like to clean up a fuel leak like that.

If you're looking for a replacement, 240 fuel injection tanks are all the same from year model 1978 onwards. The intank lift pump changed for LH injection (as did the main pump).

The carb engined 240s use a different tank to the fuel injected cars. (no swirl pot, and IIRC a different diameter tank sender hole)

Skandix has them brand new, but be prepared to pay.

However IMHO, no real need to go new - there's lots of scrapped 240s in OZ. The tank which (the pieces of) that sender unit came out of was cleaned out by the local radiator and tank repair guy, and it got an internal coasting too to prevent corrosion. A while back, I got a couple of 240 tanks from carnut22 and they're going to get the same treatment before installation in the project vehicles they're marked for, so I'd recommend doing that to your replacement tank.

$800 or so for new Volvo tank for either type iirc, Mark is the guy

I priced from Rockauto and about $700 AUD to my door.

My mechanic got good one at wreckers for $270 .

270 is a great price, usually 400 odd.

I had a quote from a fuel tank repair shop and it was $700! i passed.

If a reapiar is $700 then brand new from Berry Motor Group at similat price is much better!

Mark gets a lot of parts that are hard to get in multiples so they have stock , the store area at the factory is BIG!

He gets the stuff form GCP every six months ( they only ship twice a year now , who knows why…..) So WE have access as he is a dedicated nutter in cars…… ( nearly 500 cars he has owned just because he likes them and wants to have owned them…..)
