So I'm pretty happy with my 2002 V40 2.0T after a two year long gradual tidy up. The wife wouldn't sit in it when I first bought it and now she is quite happy to travel along for the ride. New bits include front seats, low km motor & turbo from Japan, engine mounts, radiator, battery, rear cargo area (everything), brake vacuum unit, fuel pressure regulator, roof lining, various expensive side mouldings, front discs and pads and some missing interior trim pieces……plus probably another 30-40 miscellaneous bits I have forgotten.

Stu Oldfield at Voltek looked after the engine swap very professionally.

So anyway…..spotted this on Carbids a couple of weeks ago went and had a look at the Caringbah showrooms and had to have it. Rough in places, good in others. I've always loved these ever since I was a kid, either in maroon or red with the Virgos. Bidded on it and won it on Easter Thursday, I had to wait over Easter to pick it up.

The wife was overseas so forgiveness was the better option than permission.

Fair enough. The Caringbah inspection confirmed most of the above. Started first turn of the key and sounded like a muffler delete. Paint was worn back to primer from polishing in spots, bonnet paint was stuffed, interior seemed pretty good and engine looked like it had a heap of new bits on it. Some minor rust but I had seen worse at the previous week's Show and Shine. Rubber, mouldings etc could do with some attention.

Tuesday morning. First drive of a 240. Maladies and impressions in a rough order that I remember.

  • Hand window winder, drivers side is banging on the speaker cover
  • Door pockets held together with rivets and cloth tape
  • Drivers door grab is loose from door card
  • Brakes are very good!
  • Muffler delete sounds cool!
  • Blown globe light indicator comes on when applying brakes
  • Suspension and steering are great, comfortable ride
  • It starts raining. low & high speed wiwer works, intermittent doesn't
  • Window washer doesn't work
  • Rear wiper and washer don't work
  • Third brake light sometimes works sometimes doesn't & is missing the cover
  • A strip of sparkie's insulation tape doing a rough seal of front windscreen, works loose and flaps around on the M5
  • I read these were slow but it seems to have a little bit of poke
  • No weird sounds at speed suspension and steering seem good!
  • Drivers seat may need a foam/base refresh. It's sort of comfortable but sort of wrongly aligned.

Anyway got her home and had a look at the rear tail light stage right. Tail light was melted around the brake light area. Dremelled it down and sanded contact points. Fixed the brake blown bulb issue but introduced a blinker/reverse/fog light blown bulb warning.

Like most 240's they need a little bit of work.

They do go alright as they have good low down torque. You might come undone when you try to drag people up to 100kmh though.

GreenGL yes I was expecting quite a few things to be fixed and kind of enjoy getting them back to the way they should be. A lot of small victories on the v40 resulted in a fun, reliable car that I look forward driving home in after a day at work. I'm having fun with the 240 already.

The most common rear repairs are tailgate rubber and all tailgate wires that go through the hinges. Those are special silicone sleeved jobs due to the constant flexing.

Roinik yes the third brake light needs the back door shut "just right" for it to work so I think the loom is smooshed.

Went to Picton Cars and Coffee Yesterday with some other Volvo guys and Peter with a gold 240GL pretty well said the same thing. Two man job to get it off with looms available from IPD.

Threw a few stickers and some Mighty Car Mods 100mph tape on her. Consensus from the guys was a few laughs, it's janky but a good solid base. Keep the enamel duco as is and proabably vinyl wrap the bonnet in black.

Comfortable cruisy ride from Sydney's Western suburbs to Picton, with no alarming noises, smells or warnings.

      Onward with some small things……

I'm on an audio gear forum Audiokarma and thought I'd apply some audio repair stuff to a 36 year old Volvo with electrical issues. Deoxit D5 has a pretty good reputation over on AudioKarma, it deoxidises and lightly lubes connections. Great for pots, switches and connectors. A 50 year old Yamaha receiver with a "scratchy" volume control was sprayed ten years ago and hasn't required a dose since.

So a can of De-Oxit D5 has become a new addition to the glovebox. I've used this to rejuvenate some vintage Yamaha, Harman Kardon and JBL gear, now onto some Swedish gear. Got about 10 x crusty electrical terminal/contact/switch things working again. Stuff is magic.

      Image description

Under bonnet light now works. I thought this was completely gone.

      Image description

Interior light worked when put on the "ON" position 50% of the time but door switches did not work. All good now.

      Image description

Rear cargo dome light was not working at all. It now works with the door switch and in the ON position

      Image description

Hit all the door switches for good measure. Only the rear RHS was working. All now activate to dome light, including the rear cargo door.

      Image description

Windscreen washer motor was dead. Sprayed a little deoxit on the terminals and it came to life. Nozzles were blocked and needed a blow out.

      Image description

Replaced the front dome bulb with an LED unit. Quite a bit brighter inside.

Image descriptionAnd lastly applied Deoxit to any 1/2 oxidised earth screw I could find in the engine bay. Unscrewed and screwed them them for good measure.

Next thing that was really bothering me "Trim Mouldings". Didn't know if these were described as "Door protectors', "Door trim" and various other google searches. Downloaded a parts catalogue and found they are known officially by Volvo as "Trim Mouldings'.

I find that the later series 240s trim mouldings really add the the style of the car. Divides it vertically in a pleasing way with a very strong thick line. Unfortunately my vehicle had molding issues

        Image description

        Image description

I thought some mouldings may be the older earlier thinner trim in places but they were new style mouldings. Age had degraded the thick rubber from the bottom on the LHS front door, RHS wing, RHS rear 1/4. Broken clips on most. RHS rear door is stuffed.

I did a buy me now on eBay for a bundle over Easter before I had picked up the car….no reply from seller. Picked up the car Easter Tuesday. Flew to Adelaide, stayed a few days (still no reply from seller) flew back to Sydney, got turned back to Adelaide due to the rain, spent the night in the airport and arrived in Sydney next morning. Still no reply. Received a reply 10 days later from a very apologetic seller & picked up the mouldings, talked some 240 things and got some spare clips in the deal.

        Image description

Also bought 20 odd of the new designed clips from IPD.

        Image description

These are great, put them in, turn them 90 degrees and pop them on. Only issue is if the stainless is a little loose, they will rotate and drop out and bounce like a bloody ball bearing a roll away. Once they are clipped in though they hold firm.

        Slide in

        Image description

Turn 90 degrees and pop 'em on.

        Image description

Cleaned the dust off. Treated the rubber with a good load of 303 protectant. And applied the mouldings with all the clips. LHS is complete and that complete thick black & chrome line looks much better IMHO.

        Image description

        Image description

If anyone has a rear 240 RHS rear door (1246632) and RHS rear 1/4 panel wagon moulding (1255960) in chrome,

        please get in touch!

        Miscellaneous jobs.

        Aero wipers.

        Image description

OEM fuel cap with the springy bungy cord thing. (I'm going to lose the non-OEM cap eventually plus the 240 "knows" if it has original gear 🙂 ) No hook for it like on the V40, so screwed it inside where it doesn't foul the spring mechanism. Greased the spring for good measure, it doesn't creak and squawk any more. Nice and smooth. It springs closed with a satisfying "thunk".

        Image description

New rear tail light. Previous one had melted and was giving all sorts of bulb out issues.

        Image description

I'll give this to Volvo, their cargo areas are made from industrial strength fabrics, plywood & material that will survive the apocalypse. Still looks great after 36 years. Couple of minor issues.

RHS panel was flopping around due to degraded clips and worn holes on the card material.

        Image description

Ordered some new clips from IPD and had a look at the card, holes are worn in places and split in others. It will need replacing at a later date but holds OK for now.

        Image description

Sits flush and tight for now.

        Image description

LHS was missing latches and was screwed in with some flat head self tappers.

        Image description

Out with the self tappers and in with the proper OEM latches. Wrong colour but can be re-coloured at a later date.

        Image description

Not sure 100% sure about the rear door latch?! Pretty sure it should not be threaded. Adjusted it back a bit to aid closing & locking which makes me think that the hinges may have worn over time.

        Johnno_

The FPR the blue silicon vac hose is on should be replaced…..It was the only thing apart from fuel pump?s on the 91 that stopped me one drie fromwork……..Did the pumps as well as preventative. Got a newq fuel replay sat there to go in as well.

Pretty cheap parts for keeping it going when you. really dont want it to stop….

Ex850R Ok I'll add the FPR to the cart. Cheaper than the V40 one which was more expensive than a FPR for a a Lamborghini Gallardo! I have a Meyle pump relay in the cart already and I'll keep the old one in the on board "spares box". You would be the third or fouth owner to advise me relay-wise so I am taking it on as gospel!

            Johnno_

Mark gives good prices on all that stuff and genuine Volvo has 2year Aussie warranty.

Worth asking him I think the FpR was 28 or 38, don’t recall, he brings them to my mechanic and I pay him lump sums or buy him a meal and a pint haha.

Berrys has stock on shelves for most everything Volvo or next day.

Tell him Les sent you, 03 9874 5544 BMG Mark. He gets in at like 630 am.

Ex850R Thanks for the Berry tip and the referral

Think I'll cancel the order for the fuel pump relay, modifications appear to have been done in a robust and workmanlike manner…….. as they say in the building trade, "Looks good from my house."

              Image description

              Image description

ramrod well the idea was to keep the old relay as a spare. Then I found out it was this the piggy backed abomination this morning.

It will be going in the bin…..or a trophy case.

The back side panels can be fixed with thin sheet steel or ally gued on with the clip hole in it.

              Watch for leaky windscreen seal.
