I have been the only owner of this 2013 XC60 and it has 124,000 kms on the odometer. I have been getting a warning sign on the dash 'transmission performance low'. I took it to a Volvo service centre and they are going to do a 'readaptation' (I think that is the term). They said it 'may' help but ultimately the transmission will die in between 6 months and 2 years. Then I'll need a new transmission and the quote …. $14,000.

Has anyone else had this issue with a 2013 model?

It seems a little crazy to me that an 11 year-old car can require a $14k new part when I've been driving it like a baby, having it serviced every year etc. etc.

Which transmission? If it's the PowerShift then yes, it's quite possible. This is a Ford DCT, not a torque converter automatic. They aren't renowned for longevity.

MichCar - What part of the world are you in? (So you can be referred to an independent Volvo expert).

Did the dealer ever do a transmission fluid change and flush? Or did they give you the "sealed for life" malarkey, where they claim the transmission fluid never needs changing?

If it's a Ford PowerShit transmission, you may have problems.

Chris Hmmm, I believe it is the Ford DCT. The guy in the Volvo service centre did refer to it being a Ford transmission.

I'd certainly do the readaptation to see what improvement is possible. That said, it's probably not a long term proposition. I wouldn't be paying 14k, but look into what auto trans shops can do otherwise a second hand transmission.

Start thinking about what you'd replace the car with…

If the car drives ok some of the time ……trade it.

MichCar It will be one of two boxes fitted to that car.

The TF80SC transmissions must have a fluid change and flush at no more than every 80,000 km (ideally, at every 60K km) if the owner wants the trans to live. Volvo claims these rubber bands are "sealed for life".... but they want to sell you (and fleets) new cars when the transmissions crap out. Y'see, to cut projected fleet servicing costs down, they didn't put any fluid filters inside the TF80SC, then fed clients the fiction that the trans fluid never needed to be changed..... even when it's working at hundreds of PSI and at hundreds of degrees C. Hence Volvo's idiotic "sealed for life" mantra where dealers refuse to do routine oil flushes on request. TF80SC problems can usually be cured by valve body replacement, possibly also torque converter replacement, and then maintained in good order with fluid flushes at sensible intervals. The software for adaptions must also be altered when the fluid is changed.

And the TF80SC is the better of the two boxes....

The Ford PowerShift (correctly referred to as PowerShit) led to - in Ford's case - a massive recall and buyback of affected vehicles. However, these clunkers were also fitted to some Volvo models during the Dark Years (1999-2010) when Ford were Volvo's overlords, and I don't believe Volvos were covered under the ACCC's judgment against Ford in the PowerShit matter. There's no real cure for PowerShit transmission woes.

$14K is a ridiculous amount of money to spend on any road car's gearbox. It might be worth talking with an expert who primary aim isn't to sell you a new car.
In you're in Melbourne, go and see Berry Motor Group.
          In Sydney, see Savvas Auto.
          In Canberra, see Ike's.
In Brisbane, see GLT Car Centre.
In Adelaide, see Volv or Ronton's.

Chris Yep, thinking we'll get a refurbished transmission to the last the next few years … but definitely not paying $14k!

Major Ledfoot Thanks for your detailed reply Major Ledfoot. I'm sure the $14k was quoted simply to suggest a 'trade in'. Funny how their service centres are now located inside their new sales buildings. Hmmm.

I've had so much trouble with this vehicle. It's been an absolute lemon. I'm in Sydney so thanks for the suggestion to see Savvas.
