They all have cracks.

At least all of the ones I've seen

Sometimes there are only surface cracks, other times there are cracks which extend all the way through the whole casting.

Some cracks are an obvious problem, other cracks (only on the surface are fine and won't give you any problems)

Major Ledfoot Have heard new ones aren't of the same quality & are harder to repair. Yoshifab did a post about it a while ago.

90+ manifolds are more prone to cracking than the -89 manifolds.

@ramrod yeah that manifold is pretty typical of what I have seen as well. Perfectly fine to run like that.

I wouldn’t run it myself like that, compared to getting it repaired. The pic tells the story, when exposed to oxygen its develops a hot spot.
Sure it wont fall apart, - but - whats sits exactly after the hot spot manifold and thats the exhaust turbine and I imagine the fine turbine blade tips would cop a bit of blow torch on rich oxygen setting.

Worth fixing all things considered.

Thanks for all the comments. I agree that the manifold will need to repaired. As i understand that involves grinding out the crack and then welding. This is why i was looking for the older "log" style manifold. In my experience they are less prone to cracking.

I have not seen or heard of anyone successfully welding up cracked Volvo car turbo manifolds.

I know two extremely competent welders, one of whom could reweld truck and bus turbo manifolds with his eyes closed, but they both cursed the Volvo manifolds.

Well I've had an expert welder (Owen) who welded a cast iron turbo manifold for me.
10 years later, perfect.
Steps:
Grind a big vee into cracks and beyond.
Initially used oxy acetylene to thoroughly warm up the cast iron manifold to hot.
Then stick weld with the appropriate rod.
Then immediately dumped into lime on completion.
Covered over to cool real slow.

Peening each run with the cast iron rods before doing the next run.

mate at work is doing a machine flange that a shit employee hit with hammer and broke , parts are unobtanium to replace the part.

Mate got rods ordered in , just under $300 for a very small packet….
