Ben240s Hi all I have a manual steering rack from my 1980 244 , I need to replace the lower ball joints , rack end tie rods and boots. How do I identify what rack it is? Do people use power steering parts on them ? Are they different?
Regan Ben240s I have used the power steering ball joints with my manual rack. Literally have no issues with how heavy the steering is besides at a dead stop which is a little hard but nothing I can't handle. I think from memory it's just a touch more positive offeset on them but for the most part the streering feels fine.
ramrod If you put power steering ball joints on a manual steering rack, it will be harder to steer. Take a picture of the rack boots, I have new ones
jamesinc There should be a part number stamped near the pinion housing. IIRC on my manual rack, the tie rods are the same as the CAM rack, but the boots are different sizes. The tie rod ends are the same for all racks. The control arm ball joints are different between power (274118 left, 274119 right) and manual (274117 both sides) rack as ramrod said, they all fit but the power ones will give you more caster, which on manual racks will make the steering heavier.
Ben240s ramrod hard to tell one boot on mine ones big on one end and then the other sides smaller is that how they are ?
ramrod You are correct left and right are different when talking about manual steering racks I don’t have in stock the boots for a manual rack sorry I can order them though if you can wait for international delivery
jamesinc The passenger side boot is a pain in the ass, the Volvo boot always seems to be the wrong size, benefit from my experience, just buy boot Kelpro SRB-049, $12 on Sparesbox https://www.sparesbox.com.au/products/kelpro-steering-rack-boot-srb-049-fits-toyota-corolla Fits perfectly. Ben240s jamesinc thanks for that James I'll get onto that , as for the opposite side is the the same as the power steering racks ?
