531 Corrosion Holes

Good afternoon fellow ovlov owners..
Im hoping someone can advise me on best way forward with this ..
So I've taken off my 531 head (B230 N/A ) and it has a couple of holes in the surface.. at some point looks like someone has put some JB weld in it as I was able to easily dig out the cheese..largest one is almost 4mm deep ..and 5mm across .
So is the head well and truly f***ed ?
Is it weldable for long term repair.? .
Should I just get a good 530 or 531 head from someone ?
Im still in the market for a Turbo B230 btw 0r 16 V head.. I can't collect full cars which is a pain as had to turn down both of the above options recently..

What car is it in? That sounds like a 531 I rebuilt years ago.

You can definitely get it welded up and resurfaced. If you're in Sydney talk to Thornleigh Cylinder Heads.

Its a 94 N/A wagon..and basically non running ( it did but misfiring and running very rich with all the usual suspects replaced.. so doing a project on it.
Thanks for that.. will take it to an engine guy nearby who does cylinder work for local garage .. im out im Central Tablelands

It is a common place for corrosion where the coolant passage meets the aluminium head.

Both the heads I have off are similar and needs some fill work. One day when my 2 year old isn't trying to help and the shed is cleaner, I want to try Tig welding my patches up on a head just to see how not flat it becomes.

I have heard it's possible to DIY it but a machine shop visit would be the precise time efficient way.

Pictures? The corrosion shouldn't really matter as long as it isn't creeping into the area of the metal ring in the headgasket.

From the sound of it your are talking about where holes in the headgasket line up with a blank surface in the head? Worst case if it did manage to corrode completely through would probably only be an insignificant change in how water flows between the block/head

I would grind out the area with a tiny stone in a dremmal and fill them with jbweld again and sand flat then rock it
The area is outside of the fire ring so it's not supporting anything
Otherwise have it welded and then surfaced

Thanks for the advice.. think I will get it properly welded this time. Didnt like the way I was able to scoop out whatever crumbly cheese filler had been used in the past lol
