Hi guys,
2010 XC70, D5
So, basically the title says it all. You turn the car off and a few times the fan has kept running for a few minutes afterwards (that's how it STARTED... but it got worse.) At first I thought it might actually be deliberate, like until the coolant gets down to a certain temperature, but then it didn't happen for ages, and today my wife messaged me from her work and said that she got back to the car after 2 hours and the fan was still on.
I told her to start the car and then shut it off again, but that didn't stop it. So when she finished work I was down there with the jump starter because 8 hours of the fan will flatten the battery of course. The fan went full blast again the second I connected the jump starter, and when we got it home, I just had to disconnect the battery.
All I know to check is the coolant level, which seems fine.
I'm actually having the seatbelt recall done at Volvo (Moss Vale) this Friday... so they will obviously notice this minor issue (!) but I just don't want to be charged $2K for a dodgy relay or some kind of temp sensor or something. Anyone got any ideas?
Cheers, Lamont.
Fan not turning off when car is off, flat battery
It's the radiator fan controllers on their way out.
The fans bearings fail and the current drag on the speed controllers ruins them.
You buy complete new fan "cassette" with controllers from Volvo.
I'm about to do mine.
Call Mark at Berry Motor Group, he got my v60 one a few hundred cheaper than list from his dealer spares mates.
Volvo Australia supply means 2 year warranty.
Replacing the fan control modules with any you find will only fail again as the fans are toast.
*Mark confirmed the issue you stated as this part. I asked him about mine also as the V60 one just died straight out, car was cooking.....
Thank you Stuart!
