Its one of those jobs you can do but don't really want to. Who'd have thought you'd have to pull it to change a trim kit?
AshDVS
Rob;9404 wroteActually, i think you will need to pull it off regardless, you also need to pull the indicator switch etc off the column so that you can slide the dash over it.
That smells. Maybe I can pull it forward on the column enough to check it and swap over the dash trim stuff.
BTW,
@Rob, I'm not keen on doing this again, so you get first dibs on Les' dash trim kit.
brock
You definitely need to pull the steering wheel off to get the whole dash out, I've had mine out a couple of times to fix wiring issues.
AshDVS
Thanks man. Not 100% sure I need to get it all the way out yet, but we'll see when I have another look in the morning.
I think I'll probably replace the handbrake boot and shifter boot and get those little cosmetic bits done while it's apart.

Quick work there Ash , whilst there , check that the door to shift air from top to feet on HVAC does its job as they leak to floor after time , dunno what the cure is , maybe a foam seal? If you can see any mounts FIX THEM REALLY WELL with some ally and windscreen glue or some such. I think mine had been done but the 17" wheels have knocked one outta shape and I get an annoying squeak......
I am interested in some nice stitched leather boots for my controls too. Are you using new stock?
Does your tiller look THAT bad? Mine is disgusting , I hope the 850 one can be used on these , I don't care if the shape isn't right. Not until I can maybe get my mate in SAus , who was/is a medical shoe maker to stitch me a nice one with red stitching , or blue maybe..... If he can I will say he has some customers here!?
AshDVS
I found a place that makes custom boots for shifters and handbrake handles on the web - their work looks good.
I'll pop a link up when I get in front of a computer again rather than the phone.
My steering wheel is 'ok' - i'll look at doing something about that later though as it doesn't matter if the dash is out or not to remove it and sort it out.
On my 850T5, I replaced the steering wheel and door trim inserts with 850R items - much nicer.
Ex850R
Yep , keen to see the link and cost and what the work looks like.
AshDVS
Ex850R
That's a reasonable price and good instructions too.
Cheers.
AshDVS
I thought so.
Just need to confirm they can do an auto shifter boot.
Ill get both done in alcantara. I've also asked if they can do stitching in the colour I'd like.
If they answer as I hope they will, I may even get them to do a steering wheel too.
Ex850R
For USD $129 base price for x70 wheel you can't go wrong. That place here that does old rods etc wanted $350+ , the labour is the big cost but still.
The Elwood site in USA that do seat recovering sets speak of new alcantara like product better than in the day , I hope that's the improved stuff here.
AshDVS
They've contacted me already and we're just confirming colours.
If we can get onto it this week, I'll leave the console and handbrake surround out until I have the new boots and reassemble all at the same time.
AshDVS
Just starting reinstall. No broken dash tabs, though the dash appears to have been off/out before.
Ex850R
Looks good already.
See if you can beef up the dash mounts , it WILL start to squeak n moan.
AshDVS
Done. Sikaflex and 0.8mm aluminium sheet.

Hey Ash , how are the door cards at the armrest , is the vinyl coming away?
I have a plan to drill holes in the board ? card and inject a flowing glue then get suction on the holes to pull the vinyl down and weighing with wheat bag or some such. Not a big market for it but i should do mine as they are very good still but are pulling a little.
AshDVS
I've seen that problem before with the T models but not on T5 and R models (which, in Australia, share the same door cards)
I've got some plastic items in both front doors too replace and the power window switch cluster on the RF door is typcially dodgy (common fault) - mine will open but not close the LR window.
If I have time, the RF door is being replaced tomorrow, so will swap in some uncracked plastic bits then and order a brand new window switch cluster - its damn near impossible to find a used one that works properly now.
Bonnet is the #1 candidate for replacement tomorrow as it takes up a lot of space. Currently its in our race trailer and I need to get that cleaned and ready to go for next weekend.
Once the bonnet has been swapped, I'll give mr scap metal man a call and he can take away the old one.
Ex850R
Oh , i didnt notice that , my T5 was a really nice example so it must have had good door cards.
I got a door swirch set from PFS UK , the USA sellers have RHD but it must have been cheaper at PFS.
How bad is the bonnet damage?
AshDVS
We do genuine and oem replacement parts through DVS so the switch will be easy.
Bonnet isnt that bad. dint in the grille surround, and bad gravel rash. I've got a replacement in the right colour.
Since silver is a common colour, often panel replacement is cheaper than fix and repaint.
If the car was red, I probably wouldnt do it though.
AshDVS
I got another email from the guys at Redline.
They haven't done an auto shifter before so I will send across a standard auto shifter boot - dont know how it seperates yet.
They are going to do a console lid for me and also the handbrake boot.
