An R thread will be tough, because they didn't have a 'limited' build.
They started and eventually, at end of model life, production stopped. They were also available in 'normal' colours.
So, while an 850R is a 'better' car - a little more refined, a little more power, etc, etc, a T5R is a much cooler car to have.
I'd like a yellow T5R simply because you can get a black or an olive 850R but the yellow was specific to the T5R.

We sold the T5-R to Volvdat John with an extra set of Titan rims, @Darcyrule‌ bought and now its been sold...??
We no longer own an 850R or T5-R... But that may change in the distant future

Referring to the worldwide chart in the first post - says 28 yellow, 14 black and 1 green.
14 in black is very a questionable figure indeed, borne out by the lack of sightings locally by enthusiasts.

Research by an Australian enthusiast about 12y ago could only determine 19 yellow and 6 black = 25 in total.
Years ago again, another fellow Jamie Gardoll (his father was a Volvo dealer from Orange) was able to account for 16 in yellow and was trying to find the others.
One was allotted to each main dealer in Australia. They were the most expensive Volvo for the time, about $84k on-road after taxes (have exact figure at home).
Even Volvo Australia said at the time that 25 were being imported. That said, Volvo could have brought in a few test cars being then unofficial, and not sold via dealers as brand new.

To add to the confusion... there are the first generation as such, which were yellow and black only, and then the 2nd run which were black and green only.

I wonder if Anthony's number for blacks includes the 2nd release?

IIRC there is no difference between the 2; both came as the 250bhp rather than the 225 that the T5 was, it was only when the 850R was launched was there another power increase.

Interesting - news to me. What I do know is yellows came in very early in 1995 (Volvo predicted a January delivery).

The 1995 T-5R = 177 kW (238 hp)
The 1996 'R' just had 7 kW (9hp) more, attributable to a slightly larger turbo and engine software mapping.

I wonder if I got the black and the green confuddled... I've not got anything in writing, all of this is up in my head...

The press release here was written by my Dad's team at the time, so a lot of what I know is hearsay from him and various documents he brought home...

Reading the roll call on the VOCUK site, it seems that they ran from late 94 (1995MY) to 96; yellows were 95MY only, but the greens and blacks ran from 95...

Right... did some more digging... here's a link to the initial launch brochure of the T-5R in the UK, and it had yellow and black only listed.

On reflection, (speculation galore) maybe there was a 2nd shipment during 1995 of a few more black and just one green T-5R's to obtain the final number listed in the first post chart. Could easily make sense, but no proof myself.

New production information:
Source: Volvo internal mag - Global - edition 1, 1995
For Australia - 27 yellow and 3 in stone black. Total of 30.

After the first series there was a small series of Olive green T-5Rs produced to meet the huge interest.
(Doesn't mention Olive overall numbers). Anthony

I know there is more than 3 black ones kicking around, Mark Richardson of Vp tunning has a register running with VIN numbers just call him. also running register on S60R and V70R
