What turbo did he use Anton? How much power at the wheels did it make? An m46 will survive if you treat them like you're driving a camry. But even an n/a b230 or b28 kill them when driven hard and fast. They are a weak box once you make double stock power.
And it is his car and it may be "rare" but that doesn't make it worth any more.

Anthony_Demol58;41293 wrote"Weak M46 gearboxes"???? They are tough as nails. My son had a 240 Turbo, and I mean seriously turbo'ed, and had it coupled to an M46. No problem at all, no slip of the overdrive either. The trick with the overdrives is to replace the actuating piston seals (o-rings) with slightly larger ones for better sealing, then get rid of the auto transmission fluid and replace it with 10w 40 or similar. Thats actually specified by Volvo for warmer countries like Australia. No more slip.
Ive killed more m46s then I can count
And not just gently killed... split the case in half killed....
They are weak as butter
Its always first or third that fails as well
The od has never been an issue for me
Anthony_Demol58
You must have been putting some very serious HP through them is all can say. And if there is enough power to destroy an M46 then whats going to happen to a AW71??
CamT
How rare is my car? And are the manual parts worth anything?
Anthony_Demol58
Put it this way, I'm sure there are a lot of enthusiasts out there that would love to get their hands on your car.
The manual parts probably aren't worth that much because there's not that many crazy people out there like me who are prepared to do auto to manual conversions.
However, the flywheel/clutch setup would have to be worth a bit, and the pedal set as well. Drive shafts can be fairly easily shortened so there's not much there.
CamT
Ohhh yeh that's alright, how much does the pedal box usually go for?
Anthony_Demol58
Not sure. 22 years ago I paid $600 for a complete conversion kit (old bits pulled together) from a wrecking yard for a 240, so you would think the whole lot would have to be worth double that now.
CamT
Ohhh really so the whole conversion would be expensive

I'll trade my 740T automagic with your manual \:D/

Swapping is a tonnes better way to do this. Or maybe buying a whole auto car?

There is more going on with camT car than we think. AppRently no stock jobbie in there.
@CamT‌ pedal boxes for 7/9 go for anywhere between 150-300aud.
Sometimes you get lucky and sometimes shafted. The pedal box is uncommon and desirable.
I was fortunate enough to get my at with the manual box in it, before it went to the aussie t5. (As Alex may have nentioned last night)
CamT
Haha yeh jay not a stock one going in :D how is your t5 going? How much power do you have?
deleted_user_160
Oh you do t have that engine setup in yet? Thought you did.
I'm at 160kw@rears. The t5 is getting better. Loosened up finally. After the rebuild.
Aussie t5 is not a glammors box. They shift almost agricultural. (Not smooth in actuation) although are a good choice for our cars (as we dis used in the thread about the conversion)
I'm sure we will meet in the not to distant future. You can have a drive and see for your self.
CamT
Ohh yeh the engine setup you have heard about is already in haha, yeh I would like to get to see some other volvos, are there any meets coming up that you guys are organising?
Vee_Que
A manual 740t goes for a similar price to an auto one assuming everything else is equal.
Parts themselves don't go for that much. More they are harder to find. So all the parts on your car is worth $400 assuming the box needs a rebuild.
Anton: more info on the 240t your son owns? Stock turbo motor with stock turbo?

My son sold his 240 turbo a while ago now. It was a true weapon. I'm not sure of all the details but the engine was a B23E with a special head and cam. Big turbo with electronic computerised ignition and LPG injection. It was lowered with racing drivers seat, heavier sway bars etc. The thing was seriously fast.

Me and a couple others are organising regular meets.
So you have about 80kw more than me :D

Bulletproof M46 is a new one, they were designed for non-turbo engines with less than 150hp, and were barely strong enough to handle the power of 740 and 760 Turbo's in standard form.
Volvo was so concerned about it that they actually added a "torque limiting system" to early manual 760 Turbo's, to protect the M46.
I forget how it worked exactly, but putting your foot on the clutch activated a relay, which would momentarily cut the fuel pump or possibly injector power feed when you shifted above a certain RPM, so that the available torque was momentarily limited until after the gear change was completed, to prevent sudden application of torque, which is what kills transmissions.
The wiring diagrams for the system are in the Haynes 740 manual.
The AW71 is somewhat stronger than the M46, once a few mods are done to it, though still not as strong as some of the auto's that are popular in common performance applications.
You're certainly not the only person who has done auto to manual conversions around here Anton, I converted my 760 Turbo from a ZF 4HP22 auto to a Toyota W55 manual box, converted my 164 from BW35 to M400, and last year converted another forum member's 240 from auto to M45 manual.
Anthony_Demol58
OK, point taken.
Its pretty amazing then that my sons 240 turbo which had around 15 pounds boost carried the M46 without any trouble.
