Besides costs, if it has the right input shaft length, and if you want to get the mal wood one that is longer so you can keep the ash tray, the bellhousing adaptor plate will be different but the same result, just need the correct flywheel and clutch and pivot for the bellhousing to match the flywheel. The only other thought is just the sheer cost seems high for the cost of keeping an ash tray.

Thanks Alex.
If you're sure it'll work, then I'm happy to spend the money to get the job done the way I'd like it.
Any thoughts or personal preference on which adaptor plate solution seems more ideal? At this point I'm leaning towards the Yoshifab.

Alex have you driven the car?

Alex and I both given the box a bit of shit. And a couple drivers around the area know it goes well.
Box is still tight. (Which I'm sure will subside soon) Although the car is considerably more alive.
Highway rpm is unchanged from the aw71L and 88 740 diff. 100klm/h is 2300rpm
nickm
how is 1st gear in getting off line?
Vee_Que
Is the engine getting done at the same time Aj?
Off the line in first is good. It's third where I feel it dies off in the gearing. But no worse than an m46.
Dauntless
Yeah, I'd most likely throw in a freshened up engine at the same time.
I'm hoping with a 4.1 diff the 1st and 5th ratios would be short enough to live with daily.
Vee_Que
1st isn't an issue for acceleration, it's third I think. It will be too quiet :p
Dauntless
1st could be an issue when doing a hill start with a loaded car trailer, but in general should be fine.
deleted_user_160
Yeah that blue ute realised it's no issue.
3rd does die off a bit, however I think the rpm die off a bit much before you get it into gear properly. Rather than jamming it in.
nickm
2nd to 3rd change not coming into the power band?
deleted_user_160
Box is still very tight, and notchy.
By the time you shift from second to 3rd with out slamming it too fast. Your back down in the rpm.
I have a bit more lag than many 7's running td04. Like Alex 16g which spoils very very quick.
Dauntless
Is it a used box? Are you still using the stock shifter? You might find that's just how they are. I've driven an EF or EL with a T5 and it was horrible.
nickm
The box had a rebuilt kit put through it. So it will be tight,
It also has a budget short shifter which could be contributing.
Vee_Que
I found the gearing was just too wide between gears. Also knowing they die on third from fast shifting is the other factor.
Autos are for towing. Manuals are for going fast with corners.
deleted_user_160
Yes my ford had a t5 manual in it as well. Although it was 260,000klm
I think a combination of short shifter, fresh box, and shifter being a touch further forward than ideal, all contribute.
However in saying all this it's not a bad thing. Doesn't annoy me in the slightest, and have noticed that the box is a little kinky! The harder you drive it, the better it shifts.

That's interesting, as on paper the ratios come up fairly close compared to other gearboxes, excluding the tall 5th.
I'd much rather tow with a manual. Automatics just don't allow enough engine braking for me to feel in control.
deleted_user_160
The tall 5th? 100klm/h it sits the same as my 940 aw71L 2300rpm
deleted_user_160
All in all, I'm super stoked with the car now. Every mod and adjustment I/we (Alex) make the more I'm happy with my 7series.
Just got to get the 90+ 940 front bar on it.
nickm
Do you still have the td05 in there?
I'm thinking that with the T5 and the IPD cam the car would be reasonably quick now.
Does it need a locker now?
Touchy question how is it compared to Alex's one?
