I agree with
@familyman about hoses. OE hoses last about 10 or so years on the street before they begin to fall apart internally. IIRC
@AshDVS has better than OE (and even cheaper than OE) hoses available. The caliper seals could be another problem area, so I won't be surprised if the brake shop points at these items.

I only put 95 or 98 octane fuel in my volvos, it makes a big difference to how they run.

We have been doing some tests at work on E10 fuel, and unless your engine is designed for it, it's a really bad idea (plus you get crappy economy anyway).

My thinking is that the high comp b23 should be getting 98, or 95 at the very minimum. I've had to put 91 in once when I ran out and it ran like absolute shit until I got to the servo to fill it up again. Later stuff with b230 should be ok with 95 pretty well and might get by on non ethanol 91.

My old B23E ran passably on 91 if you kept the throttle light (sometimes due to bad planning I had no option). It loved 98, and interestingly enough got enough of a mileage boost to justify the extra cost. It used to ping like mad on 91 if you put your foot into it.
My B230F gets the same mileage no matter what I put in it.
The issue with Ethanol based fuels on old cars comes down to material compatibility. Some are ok, and some can have the plasticizers leached out with long term alcohol exposure. This causes the plastics/rubbers to break down and fill the fuel system with particles big enough to block things. I'm lucky in that we don't get ethanol fuel over here, so the only alcohol mine sees is about 200ml of methanol once a year to take care of any residual moisture. No foundation in science there, just an old wives tale I've been following since I started driving.

Well its not a sticky caliper, I freed those up and the problem is still there. Its very bad. Tried an emergency stop from 80 today, LH front locked up quite easily. Don't think I'll drive it until it goes to mechanic, which is wednesday next week.
I dare say it's a blockage in hydraulic system, with not enough fluid getting to RH side, and this fluid being redirected to LH side and prematurely locking. Could very well be the hoses.

Well I cleaned out the calipers, (full of debris!) And bled brakes again. Brake problems are solved.

What was in there?

leaves, dirt, bits of old rotten anti rattle spring.

Oh - I thought you meant internally, LOL.

Looking at installing rear blind this morning. The bottom screws in easily enough but I don't have the tabs for the hooks that go onto the headlining. Would normal screws work? Do they need to go into the sheet metal itself somehow?
seggle02
Blind has been fitted.....

Took it on a club run today. Went well except for flat spotted tyres and it's running rich. Anybody got a link or a procedure for going through fuel injection system?

Well....the resistance in the pressure control unit is spot-on, and the cold start injector isn't leaking.
One obvious thing though, I remembered I hadn't given it a tune up.
I checked the timing, it was + 10 degrees (supposed to be -5 degrees!). fixed that and I checked the idle speed. Took it for a spin. Smell of raw fuel seems to be gone. It's pinging now but that'd be the 91 I put in it.
Vee_Que
Some people on here run 15degrees with b23e motors, but only use 98 as a result. Being a high comp motor designed for no cat, I hope you don't use 91 again.
Tyres will be fine with a drive, they wont have gone hard either, didn't the car move around when you had it painted?
seggle02
The plan is to use 95 or 98 fuel from here on in. Will try 95 first as its cheaper.
My club has been accepted into the logbook scheme, so as a result I will be getting a logbook. Allows 60 days plus club runs. But maintenance/service runs are included in those 60 days. So, I figure, the more work I can do on the car at home, the better. Even washing it. Taking it to get washed would waste a day.

Got logbook this afternoon. Club was approved yesterday for the scheme. Immediately for my first pleasure drive. 1 down, 59 to go!

Ooh, logbook scheme tastic!
