What buy TYQ266 as custom plate?
Then i'd be needing a c.1995 period rego sticker :P
I have absolutely no idea what state it was registered in 1981 let alone its number, and I would have no idea what its rego number would have been pre mid-90s. So either of these two options would be an educated guess....

Ah, right, I thought that was the 88 ish rego number.

Sounds like you did well at the wreckers too!

Today I reinstalled and secured the bumpers and spoiler. I also rejuvenated the bumpers, have come up a real treat! I also packed the Fiesta, I have decided I will take the dash to Sydney myself to a) save money and b) for safety - the dash is old, flimsy, difficult to pack. Hopefully they can get it done by the school holidays.

What's the significance of putting full reg on a car to be used half a dozen times a year? The club plate system in nsw is about to change too.
Who does replica reg stickers?
Personally, way too much effort to put the non original plates from the car on.
seggle02
I drive the Commodore at least once a week, and the Volvo will be the same when finished. With full rego I can go to shows etc that my club isn't going on.
Yes the system will be changing but clubs have to opt in. I don't know if my club is.

Btw replica rego stickers done by grafix unlimited. They do all states from 50s/60s to mid 80s.

Well big day. Painted the wheels and interior door handles (brown ones were disintegrating but found some good black ones - painted them brown!). After getting a ridiculous price quote from Volvo Australia for my needed parts I thought stuff it, bite the bullet get them cheaper overseas. All parts required are now ordered and on their way from either Skandix or ipd USA. Saved a couple of hundred dollars. When back wheels are painted and installed I'll make a start on putting the interior back together. Back window is going in tomorrow.
All exterior trim is installed. All mechanicals are done. Dash has been sent away and I'll be picking it up next friday.
There is a car show in Yass I am looking at making its debut :)

Well today the back window went in, remainder of the door trims and hardware were installed. I also started sorting the boot. I have discovered that my Jack is incomplete (missing cover on the end with gears). Jack doesn't fit where it's meant to go anyway. So I'll need a scissor Jack. Is a generic scissor Jack safe to use on a 240?
egads (she/her)
Looking great! Bringing it to Classic Yass?
I think a generic scissor would work as long as the mouth is the same as would a post style jack from a 140.

I assume you're referring to one of those 'stand-up, slot-in, and wind a handle' versions. I was kind of disappointed our 1991 240GL and 1986 240GL didn't come with one. They both have (original) Volvo scissor jacks.
They both look nearly the same - and - are just like others I've seen from other car brands. Except something about the handle is slightly different - the way it fits into the jack turnbuckle thing I think. Oh - and the 1991 has a bit of plastic pipe along its length, where the handle spins in one hand as you wind with the other. (So when you wind, it turns freely without grabbing onto your skin.)
So as long as the slot in the head fits that bit of rod up in the Volvo jacking point - yes they should work fine. But given what I've just said, you should be able to find a genuine one, from at least 1986-1991 models (and maybe down a couple more years - and probably up to 1993 too for that matter).

Actually, I'd be careful with that. I wanted to use the wind up jack from our 1978 244DL on either the 1986 or 1991... and while it did fit into the bracket, when you started to wind the handle, I could tell if I kept going, it was going to damage/bend something. I wish I could remember exactly... Actually, I think the bit of the jack that is horizontal, was going to push upwards and damage where the sill is crimped - I think that seam is wider (points downwards more) than the 1978's sill did. (Where they spot-weld the two seams together and it points down towards the road.)

Just wondering what tyre size do people use on the 244 with 14 inch wheels?

I have checked with the organiser, event is for pre 1980 cars only BUT as the 244 was released here in 1975 and is basically the same car as the 1981, they are letting it in.
Countdown is on......I've binned the idea of personal plates. Too expensive.
Now the question is full rego or club rego. Cheap price makes club rego appealing, however if you want to do your own thing its quite restrictive.
egads (she/her)
Full rego til your club decides whether they will do the new scheme?

seggle02;59508 wroteJust wondering what tyre size do people use on the 244 with 14 inch wheels?
I believe the original size was P185/70/R14. But I've had tyre places put at least two different sizes on in the past. It's too cold here - and raining - to go outside and check. But I believe P185/70/R14 is for sedans, and wagons P195/75/R14.
P185/70/R14, P195/75/R14 and P205/70/R14 for that matter - are about the same outer diameter. If you have a wagon P195/70/R14 is smaller, but supposedly gives an accurate speedo reading. (Both our speedos are out by nearly 10km/h, so accurate is more, "compared to what!?" - so that's what GPS & Nokia HERE maps on my smartphone is for.)
seggle02
Ah ok. I have P185/75R14. Its what was on the car when I bought it, and what I had put on when I needed a new set of tyres for roadworthy last December. Sounds close enough.
Anyway yesterday I did what was hopefully my final run to Orange Wreckers to get the final bits and pieces, mainly just nuts and screws that are unique to the 244 and cannot be bought at Bunnings. In dismantling a vehicle you lose so much!
Today I put some old grab handles in to stretch the headlining vinyl around the points where they bolt into the roof so putting new ones in is an easier job. I also set about restoring the tool kit. I'm missing most of it actually, I have bidded on one on eBay that is currently going very cheap. I have also repainted the jack today. I have decided to keep with the large black post screwy one (i.e. not scissor jack). Tomorrow if I can be bothered I might install the rear accessory roller blind I found at the wreckers.
All I can do now is wait for my next shipment of parts to come in (window scrapers, gear shift assembly).
I now need to decide what stickers (if any) I want to put on the windows. Dave Barton has a good selection. Gotta get a couple of 'Prancing Moose' stickers! I think I will eventually get an April 1989 rego label, if only for when the car was first registered in NSW....

Well there's a fly in the ointment....In November/December last year I got the AC overhauled. Worked great.
Since January car has been laid up, and I haven't used the AC. At all. Probably should have! Me thinks the seals are gone and refrigerant has escaped.....
I gave the AC a whirl this morning to see if it still worked. For the first 1-2 minutes it did work, but then it stopped working, accompanying by a strange smell that I have never smelt before.
familyman
I hate car AC... I don't mean I don't want it - but I hate that it always needs servicing. You should look into something called hychill. Do a search, contact them, ask for someone that uses it in your area. For a start, it runs at a lower pressure, so doesn't leak out as easily. I think it's also more efficient - so cooler.
Don't heed the naysayers either - they've rubbished it for years - but now (I believe) the latest (copyrighted) gas also uses a similar mix, after their years of criticism of how 'dangerous' it was - hypocrites! (And like carrying ~50 litres of gasoline or LPG around - compared to a gas that disperses in one second - isn't!?)
BradC
You can mix up your own "hychill" for quite a lot less than the $50/kg they sell it for too. I've used it for years. R12 pressures, compatible with the mineral oil in R12 systems and pretty much works with anything.
