I have sourced a 2nd hand headlining, it is in a '79 in a wreckers yard in Orange, and from what I remember it was in pretty good condition.
1. Once it is out, even if its in excellent nick, would I benefit from getting the headlining shell recovered? Once headlining is back in the car, the rear window is going back in and I don't want to take it out again.....
2. If so, what material should I use to get it recovered? (I will pay someone else to do it, I don't do visual work on a car, lest I screw it up!)
I will be doing my weekly resto session on the Volvo tomorrow morning, going to renew coolant, hoses, and fuel filter. Will also take off pre-heat hose and leaking power steering hose and take them to local repco to see if they have lengths of the hoses in stock.

Sounds good Richard. My fortnightly session will kick off tomorrow afternoon. Reassembling vent system on pax side, front sway bar bushes and any other bushes I can get on the car in the time I am there.

Well it seems we have a problem. It appears the RH rear door has come back from the shop little bent. In the middle it seems the door has caved in and is 1mm or so lower than surrounding area. Shows as poor fitting moulding, and as panel ripples.
Now is this normal? (I assume not). Am I being too finicky? I think it may be going back....
seggle02
Have taken it back, manager was unhappy with what he saw....

Update - car has returned from being re-worked at body shop, and is now of acceptable quality. This weekend have been fairly busy with other things, only items I had time for were removing the intake hosing, low pressure power steering hose (perished/cracked) and the flexible aluminium pre-heat hose. Will be sourcing these items this week, latter two I will try to get locally from an engineering company after school/work.
I have sourced a good used headlining shell for $40 from that '79 244 in the wreckers in Orange. This week I'll chase up some suitable material for the headlining, too. I will also book in the headliner to be trimmed in orange whilst I am there during Easter school holidays. Then I will borrow a ute from somewhere and bring it back to cowra and install it, after which the back window can go in!
Now - wheels. I think I might have a crack at refurbishing the alloys myself. Main issue is the clear coating has perished and is flaking off. Any tips for wheel refurbishment?

If you are coming anywhere near Yass any time soon I have a new generic pre heat hose you can have for peanuts.
Vee_Que
Don't bother with the pre heater hose. Only if you have to make the car all original.
seggle02
Well this weekend I installed a new power steering hose and bled power steering system. $13 cost!
I also got some generic pre heater hose but ruined it on installation (tore on a snag). So have to find another.... I have enquired about some headlining material, prostitch is sending a sample to me of the closest material they carry. It is alfa romeo material, colour should be right but the grain is different. I am trying to keep the resto as original as possible. Will ring a volvo specialist this week to get some intake parts.

I may be wrong, but im sure a good soda blast should get that clearcoat off without damaging the alloy underneath. If you have an aircompressor you can get the stuff from Supercheap or a paint shop and test on some wheels you don't care about to see how it goes. Alternatively you could ask your painter what he would recommend as im sure he would know something about it. Its looking real good. I still think its funny how I drove past this in Binalong the day before you picked it up. I even pulled over to have a good look!

Action items done this week:
- Pre-heat hose installed
- Fuel system looked at (cold start valve - haynes manual said if this was leaking it could cause my high fuel consumption. it wasn't leaking).
- Stripped engine down to replace timing belt. Had a lovely day of rounded nuts, and Haynes leading me up the garden path.....if I have time this week after work i'll try to actually replace it.
-Have ordered new headlining material. Getting it from pro-stitch. They don't carry any volvo material, but they sent me a sample of alfa romeo headlining material that is pretty close. Ordered 2m x 1.4m for $130 delivered.
This week coming will send off a big list of parts that I'd like to some Volvo parts specialists (namely Berry Motor Group and Volvparts), and see who comes back with the most parts available for the best price. Will also line up the trimmer in Orange. Will also show alloys to local panelbeater to see if they can remove the flaking clear.
Now.....looking down the track, looking at some rubber parts. The rubbers in the door beltine moulding have all perished, so these will be replaced with new items that I have tracked down. The 'bailey channel' (rubber channel door glass sits in) have all perished, rubber is hard but it doesn't leak. Worth replacing? Issue is I cannot find these rubbers anywhere.
Vee_Que
Also fcpeuro is another option for parts too
Vee_Que
Rubbers are available overseas. Ive come across them looking for 122 rubbers. Do you need to change the headliner? I don't recall 240 ones falling life 740s do.

High fuel consumption -> a leaking fuel accumulator can also contribute to lower consumption (that said all K-Jet parts contribute).
Basically the rule of thumb is if it idles unevenly you need to connect a pressure guage to the inlet line to the fuel distributor system to determine if the fuel pump/accumulator pressure is dead even, otherwise any fluctuation and the rest of the system just compensates up and down and you'll never solve it till the supply is correct.

It may also be the fuel pressure regulator. When the regulator went on our 245 it would idle like a bridgeport, make about 10hp and use ALL the fuel. Swapped it out and it idled like a car with a Kcam should and picked up all of its power again. It also got 10litres per 100 on a city cycle and about 9 on the highway.
It should sound like this
Not like this
Although this without a doubt sounds better. It SHOULD NOT do that.

Love a bridgeport!
My first car was an RX2 4 door Capella , couldnt afford fuel for it , kept riding the motorbike and it in the shed.....
Wanted a Wankel in my AlfaSud...

From
a post on TB:
The Volvo window channel is an almost exact match for Holden station wagon tailgate bailey felt.
See
www.betterautorubber.com.au - product code = BR1012, price = $14.70 a metre.
Hope this helps.

Long time no post. Been battling many things health, work etc.. Getting back into it these school holidays. Not going anywhere, nothing planned, none of my other cars need work (except that the Fiesta is getting some new mudflaps).
-Headlining was done and has been installed. The material had a foam backing, so I've lost 5mm of headroom lol....awaiting back window installation. Will try to get done this week.
-Timing belt was changed, engine starts and runs fine.
-today I reinstalled the trim I will be keeping, bumpers and remaining under bonnet items.
-today I found 4 240s at the wreckers in Orange, '79 sedan, '83 and 84 sedans, '86 wagon, and various stages of usefulness. Between them I got most of the parts I need to complete the restoration.. Walked away with a big box of parts for $20!! I will go back this week and get the remaining stuff I was umming and erring about (basically more external trim).
-not replacing the bailey channels. On 2nd inspection it's intact and doesn't leak.
-Dash is out and ready to be sent to somewhere to be recovered.
- still need the following parts - beltine rubbers, grabhandles, gearknob and boot. Might have to get these new....online....
- Decided that the rear mudflaps are ok to re-use, they just need repainting.
-vinyl in drivers seat has a tear, I will be reparing that by taking the seat cover off and patching from behind.
-bought a new battery today.
Now....thinking about the 'end game'....I have different options for re-registering it. It is well out of rego, its current plates of TYQ266 will need to be handed in.
My other classic ('79 Commodore) was a one owner with documented history and still wears original NSW rego of KLB321, and I got a replica rego sticker for it (Nov. 1980) The Volvo has zero history and provenance. All I could find out from the RMS was that it was first registered in NSW in April 1988.
a) club rego (I belong to a car club).
b) full rego with random plate
c) full rego, custom plate bearing a 1988 period combination and 1989 rego sticker replica
d) full rego. custom plate bearing a 1981 period combination and 1982 rego sticker replica
e) full rego, custom plate with my initials etc
f) full rego with car specific custom plate, like SWE-244 or something like that.......
Thoughts?
egads (she/her)
Can you buy the plates it had as a custom combo?

Hey Richard it is good to know that the restoration is coming along.
