6" steelies were the way to go with a hotted up Holden.
The need for such big wide wheels is just cosmetic.
HSV etc up until recently nly had skinny tyes compared to the power and even now dont have enough tyre for the big power cars , Ford included.
Add in the fact that the usual driver of said car poos his pants when he sees that the Pirelli tyres he has been burning up at a great rate cost him a months pay to replace so he gets som Chinese ones as a replacement , see ot all the time , on expensive Euro cars too.
If they are so big they are expensive , why not have the smaller option in their case.

The typical HSV and FPV large powerful cars depreciate so quickly in value that after 3-5 years, they easily fall into the hands of people that can easily afford to buy them but perhaps not afford to run them or maintain them in the way they were intended to be maintained.
As such, we see a huge market for low cost tyres in what was previously a performance-focused market.
If I was going to keep the 19s on it, I'd happily put decent rubber on them. Instead, the 20s will go back on and I'll put decent rubber on those - we both have to drive the thing and there are times where there is a child in the car. My opinion is that it isn't worth the risk of fitting something that 'might be ok'
On the 19s, I have fairly worn Kumho KU31s on the front (lots of road noise) and Nexen N7000s on the rear.
If I can have the 20s refurbed and back on in the next 6 weeks or so I'll be happy.

And now with 19" wheels.
Safe to say that the 20s are going back on. :)
Ben
Ohhh, I like the 19s, just the right size!

A little bit of progress -
I fitted the VEII glovebox a few weeks back - all the dash plastic now matches.
I'm onto VEII rear seat via a place in Adelaide, so hope to work out transport logistics this week.
Once the V70 is registered, the VE will go in to get the bodywork done. Once it's back, I'll finish up some V70 tasks and then begin the search for a C30/S40/V50.
If my towing requirements reduce any further, I'll move the VE on later in the year for a smaller DD.
AshDVS
The rear seat finally arrived about a week and a half ago, from a low km 2012 VE SV6 wagon.
It's dusty and needs a clean but it'll be fine.
I'll get it in when I have some free time next week.
Once that's done, it's ready to have the bodywork done. :)
AshDVS
New rear seat base, upper and side bolsters in.
The foam is a bit different in shape to the 2009 versions of the same thing that came out of my car.
I now not only have clean, matching rear seat parts, but there's also a cup holder and fold-out arm rest.
Interior complete.

Great Progress Ash. She looks Pretty good.
AshDVS
Thanks!
It's taken a lower priority lately. Bodywork will get done in July and I need to get around to refurbing the 20" wheels and swapping them back on.

Pffft.
Commodore?
Why?!?
AshDVS
So much for my getting the bodywork done back in June/July.
It finally got dropped off on Tuesday - bodywork will be done in two stages.
1/ Knock all the dents out and primer it.
2/ Paint it.
This week is knock all the dents out and primer it week.
Dropped it off on Tuesday morning, stuck my head back in the door mid Tuesday afternoon and the rear bar was off, the quarter was straight and they were just fine-tuning it before primer.
I might have it back from stage one early-mid next week.

I don't think I've ever looked in this thread! :-)
All the wheel talk makes me say wow I looked-up the cost of tyres for the stock 245-40x19's and 275-35x19's and now we're NEVER going to wear the current ones out ...
How low is yours? I'd like for ours to be lower, but practicality says "no" (it already scrapes the underside of the front bumper on the driveway if you get the wrong approach-angle).
AshDVS
I'd forgotten you had the staggered wheel set on yours too. I'm just going back to my 245/35/20s rather than the
245/40/19s and 275/35/19s I have on it at the moment.
Mine's quite low - it doesn't have the original springs in it - front bar scrapes on anything if you're not super careful with it. If I'd put springs in it myself, I'd have just gone with 30mm lower H&Rs, but I'd guess it's about 60-70mm lower than stock. I can measure it when it comes back if you like.
I'm happy enough with the car. I'll likely keep it for another 12 months to 2 years and replace it with something newer again.
Forg
Catrin's very taken with ours ... I was going to say that of course she would be, the comparison being a VS moo, but then she semi-regularly drives the <2yo work Aurion ... anyhoo, point being we're kinda likely to keep ours for 20 years yet. :)
Who knows, we may've cracked 100k kms by then!
AshDVS
I can understand why. Mines a brilliant car in that I can get in it, not think too much about it - its easy to drive (ignoring the A pillar), it's reliable and does everything I need.
I'll likely simply replace mine with a newer one.

You need to get one of the ones that puts the Mayor West Batman style icons on the screen & the HUD ... 'Bam'! 'Pow'!

I do like the VF dash setup though - a bit too much chrome around the place but I like the rest of it.
I went and saw mine this morning, while it was sitting in the booth.
They've knocked out and repaired even the tiny dents in the doors, repaired the RR quarter and it's in primer.
They're going to hit it with a quick coat of black so it doesn't attract the attention of Mr Plod in the next few weeks before they do the actual painting too.
There's no real need to do this as I'm V70ing around the place at the moment and it's likely I'll continue doing this until the OzVolvo meet later in the month, so the Commodore will just sit in the garage anyway.
AshDVS
I had 2 tyres stripped from my 20" rims today while I was out and about. I had planned to sandblast them (get one straightened) and have them painted.
Looking at the two now without tyres on them, I think they're just too rough so I may stick with the 19" rims that are on the car now for a little while until something else I like comes along.
Anyway, the bodywork is pretty good now - I'll just count down the weeks until they're ready to paint it. :)
Forg
I must admit some surprise that you're painting it; I have a major distrust of panel-beaters, and tend to believe that the original paint is the optimum choice even if it's a wee bit damaged.
Is my distrust misplaced?
AshDVS
The whole thing isnt getting painted, just the bits where it had dents in it prior to my buiying it -
LR door, RF door, RR door and RH quarter panel.
It's being done through the TAFE and they'll use the panel work and paint work as an assessment piece - if it's not done properly, it gets re-done.
I think unless you have a bodywork contact, it can be hard. its often a couple of years before you can tell the difference between good and bad work.
